    While I'd agree to some extent, and what's there is quality, but for a Chicago-based forum, the Toronto dataset is tiny. At the moment, anyways. By the same token, in Toronto they're only still talkin' dogs and beefs about Chicago right now too. :wink:

    Yes...and the hot dog stands are amazing too....they literally have about 12-16
    different type of toppings you can add yourself (including exotic stuff such as green ollives, corn salsa, bacon bits, jalepenos.....etc., etc....as well as the typical onions, sauerkraut....and much more)..and the dogs are not pulled out of a vat of stale water and plopped on a bun.....they are placed on a mini grill on the spot, and cooked to perfection.....it's a Toronto thing!

    As for the trip there, really not much at all in Ontario between border and Toronto......pretty much a grassy wasteland (but makes finally getting to this fantastic city all the more exhilirating!) However, the city of London does have a small public market downtown with a nice variety of food stalls. But you MUST hit the market in Toronto.....especially the seafood place near the back right on the east side. Sorry, I forget the name...but had perhaps the best fried fish sanwhich I've ever eaten! Still lusting for it!

    And finally, in a perverse way, I really like their hamburger chain Harvey's (locations everyhere)....burger is kind of different and processed tasting...but it's a great memory from childhood, and I still love it...you may not though.....

    Grassy wasteland? Not at all on the drive from Buffalo/Niagara. Has to be one of the nicer drives east of the Rockies. Vineyards, lake, bluffs, etc. Coming from the other side (Detroit or Sarnia) I guess that's right. Edit -- your London reference makes it clear, sorry. That's why I would suggest someone with time go through Western PA, NY and Niagara Falls. Coming back the less-scenic route is much faster.

    I decided to hit up Harvey's on my way out of Toronto back to Chicago this week, and there was just something very "un-beef"-y about their burgers that left me not finishing the whole thing. It had the texture of a Morningstar Griller or something (not that there's anything wrong with it, but when I order a burger I'm looking for something that tastes like it came from a cow). I did appreciate the variety of toppings you can get on their burgers, and their fries were great, but that burger wasn't very burger-like...

    I agree with you 100%. I took three or four bites of a Harvey's hamburger last month in Belleville, ON and teh burger reminded me of the school lunch program burgers. It seemed as if there was a soy filler in there. It was the WORST burger that I have had in a while.

    What was really weird was that the young lady preparing the burger kept sticking the patty with a pocket thermometer. That was a first for me.

    The area between Windsor, ON and Leamington, ON in Essex Co. is one of the major agricultural centers in North America. However, to find anything really exciting, you have to get off the 401. There are a lot of very good Asian restaurants on University Ave. in Windsor (under the Ambassador Bridge). And there is always the Tunnel BBQ.

    ============

    As much as I was unimpressed with Harvey's, the chicken at Swiss Chalet was pretty good and much better than in the past.

    I'm sure part of the problem also involve the grind. Even the *good*-resto burgers in Montréal (not to mention Harvey's) just taste like mush. Spend ten loonies for a hot shot burger, and end up with a mouthful of mush. The nearest decent burger to MTL is in Plattsburgh NY at Livingood's: superbly rendered local grassfed beef on a purpose-made bun. Can't beat it with a stick.

    Yeah, both Canuck and Québecker burgers suck. Really.
