A place that I like to the North of the city, but west of me, is Smokin T's in Long Grove, at 22 and Old McHenry rd. It is not to the level of Smoque, but it is much better than Real Urban. I particularly like the short rib (boneless) that they use instead of brisket.

Ate at Honky Tonk once. Baby backs were so-so. Smoque blew them away. BUT, the short ribs were very, very good.
Are Smokin Ts just as good???????? Better??????? Or you have never been to Honky Tonk?

    Thanks,

I know I'm taking a chance but I want to throw it out you LTHers, I'm doing two types of BBQ ribs. The original Myron and Phil ribs with the original sauce and a six hour slowly smoked BBQ rib. The smoked ribs don't fall off the bone and have a sweeter sauce served with them. We are also doing Pulled pork, Brisket and Beer Ribs. I would like to here form you.

I have never been to Honky Tonk. The thing that I like about the short rib meat is the fat content, more like a point cut of brisket, and it doesnt dry out like flat cuts can.

    Time for an A.P.B.
It has been a while since the Irving Park store. He got married?? or ?? to a Thai girl & changed the menu & his mother came in to get the restaurant back on track and I don't know what he did. But like Paul Simon said " 50 Ways".
The restaurant is still Thai. If you go in & ask for Larry, all of a sudden they can't understand you.
Or maybe we need Sgt. Preston & Youkon King of the Northwest Mounted Police.

BUT WE NEED TO GET LARRY BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last I heard Larry Tucker was at Burnham Park Yacht Club. But that was a couple years ago so it wouldn't be surprising if, Bahena-like, he has moved on already. Some of the places he's worked at (or owned) are Tropical Hut, Claim Company, Café Luciano, Doro's, Xanadu, Morton's, Minnie's Deli, Ditka's, Nida's, NN Smokehouse, NN Spice Islands, LT's Grill and Biasetti's. I'm sure I'm missing some.

In the December 2012 edition of On the Wind, Larry Tucker is mentioned several times so it seems quite possible he's still at the Burnham Park Yacht Club.

No boat? No problem! You do not have to own one to join BPYC. Initiation—$1500; dues—$1200/year; minimum—$85 to $125/month. Looking forward to your report.

The Full Slab in Third Lake (next to Grayslake) appears closed. Saturday, August 2nd, I bought a Groupon online ($10 for $20 worth of food.) I arrived at the restaurant and found no signs of life. There was no sign explaining what they are doing but peering in the windows revealed much of the tables and chairs gone, construction materials on the floor. A later phone call to the restaurant resulted in ringing and ringing with no voice-mail. I've contacted Groupon via email and they will check further and respond. I would advise not buying this Groupon without checking with the restaurant to see if they are open.

Excellent. I've always enjoyed Larry's cooking.

That great arbiter of taste, Fox News, has named Smoque one of the 10 best BBQ Joints in the country. http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/09/ ... nts-in-us/.

As much as I might agree with (or at least tolerate) some of those picks, the inclusion of Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati instantly removes all legitimacy from the list.

That list is notable more for what they left off than for what they included, IMO. Still, it's nice to see Barry and the crew fro Smoque get a shout out.

My new favorite for all-around barbecue is Bombers in Munster, IN. I think I may like it a bit better than Smoque, at least for brisket and pulled pork. The best brisket I've ever had was theirs. Plus if you enjoy burnt ends, this is your place. Call ahead, as they run out of brisket and burnt ends pretty quickly.

Is that a hamburger they show for Daisy Mays? Methinks they might be expanding the BBQ definition to include grilling.

In any case, the list is deeply suspect. While I can appreciate Montgomery Inn if I'm in the mood for Mad Men cuisine, I'd rather surrender to the Huns than include the Inn on any Top 10 list! Further to the point, 2 miles down the river from said Montgomery Inn Boathouse, is a darn good joint Smokin decent cue called Eli's. By no means a top 10 joint, but good que if you find yourself in Cincinnati and far closer to inclusion on this list than MI.

Funny you should mention Bombers. Coincidently I was just there the other day. Like many BBQ places, along with low heat and smoke, timing is also in ingredient...perhaps the most important one at a place that doesn't have a constant flow of customers. If you hit it at the right time, the BBQ is great. Other times, it's as dry as the Sahara. Bombers deserves more business to help them turn out a more consistent product, because they seem to know what they are doing with their Southern Pride.
