It's that time of year: LTH is participating in Soup & Bread 2014 at the Hideout (1354 West Wabansia Chicago IL 60642)--our night is Wednesday, February 12th from 5:30-8:00.

Our theme for the night is-- Love, Lust & Hate (pre-Valentine's day fun!) This should give everyone LOTS of options. The only request is that we have at least 1 Vegetarian and 1 Vegan entry--soups that are otherwise Veg but with optional meat add-ons are always welcome. Based on prior years, we recommend bringing 3-4 gallons of soup.

The hosts provide us with slow-cookers and serving utensils. You should plan to bring your soup already warm since heating a cold soup in the slow cookers can be very challenging. Also, our serving space is pretty tight so keep that in mind when planning your soup--there usually isn't a lot of room for multiple topping bowls, etc.

We need 8 Soup Chefs and unlimited bread and dessert volunteers. And, of course, people to come out and support our efforts! If you're interested, please sign up now and you can let us know what soup you'll be bringing later.

    Participants:

    Soup:

    1. Boudreaulicious--Aphrodisiac Soup (Tomato, onion, garlic & rosemary roasted in red wine and olive oil, roasted pork stock, topped with ginger glazed bacon & toasted chili-dusted pine nuts) (meat)
    2. irisarbor--Italian Wedding Soup (meat)
    3. leek--Borscht w/yogurt drizzle--(Vegan option)
    4. laikom--Haejangguk (meat)
    5. mbh--Lustful Lentil & Coconut (Vegan)
    6. JeffB--Potaje de Garbanzos/Cocido Andaluz (meat)
    7. Cathy2--Cheese Soup--Vegetarian
    8. Trixie Pea--Vietnamese Rice Soup (Chao) with an optional beef heart meatball garnish (meat)

    Bread/Dessert:
    1. Just Joan --World Peace cookies (chocolate), blondie bars
    2. Dave148--Buttermilk Chocolate cookies
    3. Hellodali--homemade candy selection
    4. Mrs. Ingie--Nutella meringues
    5. Ronnie Suburban
    6. Stevez--coffee cake
    7.

    Hi,

I will bring dessert. If something happens and I cannot physically bring it, I will pass it to irisarbor.

    Regards,

    In for dessert.

I cannot remember this detail from previous years: if one is going to bring soup, how much should they bring?

    Thanks, for taking this on.

3-4 gallons is the recommended amount. I'll add it to the main post as well.

I usually bring at least 4 gallons every year and it always sells out. And the common opinion that it's a vegetarian-heavy crowd never seems to hold true either from my experience the last 4 years. 3 gallons is plenty if that's what your stock pot holds!!

When I did CESJ, I brought 4 gallons of broth plus the steak, beans, bacon etc on the side, and it was gone before everyone was finished eating. It was a blast, and I can't wait to make some soup again this year!

Yes, per contributor. When I have done this event in the past, I've made even more and it's always been demolished by the end of the evening (except for the one time I made a vegan soup, which was appreciated by the vegans, but largely went untouched by the meat loving throngs). It's a soup slurping crowd that shows up at these events.

I enjoyed my experience last year and would like to help out again. I must say that the theme has me stumped for soup. I do recall a ton of donated bakery bread but perhaps a need for additional dessert. So, I offer up dessert. Perhaps Nutella Meringues.

Thanks Mrs. Ingie--desserts are always very popular so that sounds great!

We still have one soup spot open if anyone wants to join us, and can always use more desserts. I hope that you all are marking your calendars to come out, donate and eat some delicious soup and other goodies!!

I'll be there and will be bringing a dessert of some sort.

In the past I've brought bread but it seems like they get an awful lot of that donated directly by bakeries. Is that the case, or is bread a desired contribution?

They do get a large bread donation--pretty sure it comes from PQM or at least last week's did. But I seem to recall that it all gets eaten too. So I'd say bring whatever you feel like--I'm sure it will be devoured along with everything else. Most importantly, bring people!!!

I am thinking of Italian Wedding Soup, even though I have never made it before-I'm brave, and I love it.
and weddings are supposed to be about love everlasting
or about love lasting for at least 32 years so far (in my case)
