Presented by MilwaukeeFood.com, Milwaukee Harley-Davidson, and the Horny Goat Brewing Company, The Milwaukee Chili Bowl cooks up a culinary carnival that presents more than 30 area restaurants vying to win the 2012 Golden Ladle Award with their more than 60 varieties of chili. Bellies will rumble like octuplets-expecting motorcycles as the aromas of vegetarian and meaty chilies waft through the Potawatomi Bingo Casino's new Expo Center. Admission grants attendees eight three-ounce samples from their choice of local competitors, with molten meals from the likes of Red Rock Saloon, Saz's State House, and Cafe Manna. Guests can dip complimentary bread sticks from Peter Sciortino's Bakery into traditional chili or take taste buds into the depths of specialty chilies such as sweet potato, vegan, and seafood. Though not included in this deal, guests can indulge in libations at a cash bar, and though smoking is not allowed in the Expo Center it is allowed in the casino. This event includes free parking. The Chili Bowl's spicy event also benefits Hunger Task Force, which aims to prevent hunger, malnutrition, and empty internal cookie jars.

I am planning to go there if I make it back from Las Vegas Sunday morning.

I have to admit that I got home from Las Vegas Sunday morning at 2:15 am and was up at 7 am to get to Milwaukee for the event. I have to say that this was a MAJOR disappointment. I am not going to comment on the individual entrees as I was only able to try EIGHT of them.

    I have a few comments.

    1) Two of my chili samples were served cold or lukewarm. I am surprised in this day and age to be served ANY food under 150F. (For the record, having been in the food business, I have eaten lots of cold chili. However, when you hear a bunch of the people tasting the food complaining, they had an issue, too.) In both cases, they were ladeled directly from the pot that they were cooking the chili in. I notified one of the staff in charge and they noted that they had releases from all the participants. Like WOW!

    2) Some of the participants were serving dishes with seafood and the like with little if any chili powder which was sort of odd to me.

    3) I asked one lady what was in her chili so that I could determine whether to try here chili. She says, ground beef, beans and spices. Well, what kind of spices? Spices. Some of the people manning the booths were really upfront and had the lists of the ingredients while others were clueless.

    4) Some of the ingredients were unusual - almonds and peanuts would not be what I would expected.

    5) Several contestants told me that the ONLY meat they used was beef tenderloin. As I was driving back, the more I thought about it, the less sense it made. You use a relatively expensive cut that has little flavor in a dish that requires a lot of moist cooking to get the spices to blend in.

How disappointed was I? I had to make a run down the street to Real Chili.
