Hi- Yes, a lot of it was picked over on Saturday afternoon when I stopped by there, but I found something in the kitchen section that I picked up, and I got a package of three pairs of nonnonsense socks for $3, and I got two bottles of neutrogena shampoo for which I had printed two $2 coupons off of coupons.com., and got them for less than $2 a bottle. There was lots of dandruff shampoo left, but very little of the other shampoo left. I also got two bottles of deodorant which after I bought them were not that good of a deal. The vitamin and supplement section had barely been touched, and there was still lots of candy which I passed on. They were still stocking the produce section while I was there. If you would have gone there on Friday afternoon, I am sure that you would have found something. I am going to call up my store on Friday morning to see if they have the stuff marked down, and go there then.

Just got off the phone with Naperville Store (75th and Naper). They told me they are no longer ordering more product. I was told that Marianos doesn't want the location because it is 200 feet too small. I haven't been in the store in the past couple of weeks, but I was told aisles 1-3 are bare. Friday, everything excluding liquor will be 50% off and they doubt that they will make it to the predicted close date of Dec. 28. All at this location will lose their jobs.

Based on what I have seen, I don't think Belmont & Cumberland will make it to the 28th.

For all the potential bargain hunters out there, be advised that DSD vendors are being instructed to remove and credit the stores for any product of theirs not sold by the end (possibly earlier) of this week. You will not see Coke, Pepsi, Frito, Entenmann's, etc. being reduced--- Safeway would rather get full wholesale credit (no brainer) than half retail.

Regardless of whether they make it to the 28th, at least the employees will be compensated through the 28th: That's Illinois law, which is why we knew about the date in October: large employers are required to notify of major shutdowns 60 days in advance. I wandered through the Dominick's at Sheridan and Foster last night just to see how it looked. Many areas (produce, bakery, liquor) were business as usual. One or two aisles pretty empty (paper products, energy bars). I have to say I got a little melancholy for the grocery that I've been going to all my life.

I'd feel melancholy if the Dominick's that existed pre-Safeway was still the same Dominick's. But the Dominick's that has existed for the last several years is a far cry from the Dominick's I fondly recall from years earlier. Too bad really.

Sheridan and Foster is my local Dominick's and has been a subpar store for the 5 years or so I've been in the neighborhood (pre & post remodel). The produce was often wilted, not so obscure items like dill and chives missing, and the meat/seafood selection was particularly depressing. I'm not expecting too much of an improvement from Marianos but it will be nice to have the convenience factor back.

Luckily I have no problem supplementing my local grocery shopping with Old World, Argyle St., and Golden Pacific.

Hi- Somebody on one of the couponing blogs that I visit has reported that Cermak Produce is taking over the Dominick's in Lincolnwood on McCormick and Pratt. I have never been in one of their stores. How is it?

I was also in the Evanston store on Green Bay yesterday, and nothing was marked down, it looked like some of the stuff had been picked up by vendors though. I noticed that the frozen pizza section was really picked over. This is one of the stores that is rumored to be taken over by Whole Foods. Two different friends when I mentioned this yesterday were excited that Whole Foods was possibly taking over this store, and one of them said that they could see all three stores in Evanston remaining open, including the South Evanston store. The sign on the front entrance of the Green Bay Dominick's says that it will be open until 12/28, but will close at 10:00PM, starting I believe on the 15th. Thanks, Nancy

Hi- Channel 2 news just announced that Dominick's is going to mark down their liquor 30% starting this Monday, and 50% off on 12/20. I assume that this sale is only going to take place at the stores that are not being taken over. All the liquor is going to be marked down, because apparently liquor cannot be returned to the vendors due to a state law. BTW- At the same Dominick's stores all the food is going on sale tomorrow 50% off. This does not include produce, liquor or meat. As far as I know all the rest of the nonfood items such as paper products, detergent and plastic bags is also going to be included in the sale. I have heard that the employees of the stores are going to be allowed to purchase items tomorrow morning before they go on sale to the general public at 6:00am. When they had the first round of markdowns last Friday, supposedly some of the stores had problems with their registers not honoring the discounts, and so some of the stores were not able to mark their stuff down until 8:00am or later while they worked on solving the problem. I have a feeling that Dominick's is going to be even more of a zoo tomorrow than it was last Friday. Hope this helps, Nancy

It is all half off any current sale price too, so if breyers ice cream is on sale for 2.99, then it ends up being 1.49. I waited about 30 minutes to check out at the bannockburn store, but it was worth it......graeters ice cream ended up being 2.49, and they have a ton of cheese, some of which was already on sale.....locatelli pecorino romano is usually 16/lb, is on sale for 8/lb and half off comes to 4/lb. same with auricchio parmesan....normally 20/lb, ends up being 5/lb. Overall, things were pretty picked over other than the gourmet cheese area.

I just stopped by the Oak Park location and it's a zoo. Lines of cars circling the parking lot looking for a space, street parking all filled up a block in every direction...

I may try again around closing just out of curiosity but I'm not prepared to deal with the crowd I just saw even for 50% off.

There probably won't be anything left by Sunday.

No way I would set foot in a Dominick's in this situation. Black Friday is probably a good analogy.

RIP Dominick's. The first store I ever bought alcohol at when I was underage.

Hi- I don't know how much will be left by Sunday. I got to the Dempster and Dodge store in Evanston about 8:45, and already they were out of some stuff that I wanted. They were out of salmon burgers, which I love, toilet paper and most of the tall kitchen garbage bags. I ended up getting a lot of frozen lean cuisine and eating right dinners. The lean cuisine was only $.84 after the 50% off. I ended up spending $65, and I only had three coupons, although there were two additional coupons that came off because of the J4U. I ended up saving 59%. There were a ton of people there when I got there, and I had to wait in line forever because the register jammed, and it took them forever to get it going again. I felt sorry for the gentleman who was in the middle of having his order rung up when the register froze. It took them at least 20 minutes before they were able to get the register working. Only people who had ten items or less could use the self checkout. One woman behind me was tired of waiting in line, and decided to get a hand cart, and proceeded to put ten items in the hand cart, and then wait in line at self checkout, she did this three times, and she got out at least 15 minutes before I did. Another customer that was waiting in line, saw what she was doing, and did not approve of it.

For people that cannot deal with crowds, I recommend that you stear clear of Dominick's today. I stopped into the Dominick's on McCormick and Pratt in Lincolnwood for a few minutes around 6:00 this evening, and I could not believe how many people were there. I left after a few minutes, because I did not see any bargains there, even though apparently a lot of people did not agree with me. A lot of the shelves were pretty empty. It amazed me today how many people were buying cereal, because they thought $2 a box was a good deal.

Seriously! I have no intention of getting anywhere near the one in Park Ridge (which is going to become a Mariano's). My last visit was last Saturday, and I forgot about Nancy's posts, so it was a bit jarring to walk in and see aisles barricaded off and empty shelves that had been picked clean (the toothpaste on my list was definitely gone).

SuperValu still has a minor presence in Chicago. Don't know if they would be interested in many former Dominick's locations with their Save-a-Lot branded stores.

Hi= I had to work up in Winnetka this morning, and so I was driving right past the Dominick's store on Green Bay in Evanston. On my way there I was in a major hurry, and plus it was snowing, and so I didn't even look at the store while I was driving. On my way home I decided to step inside the store for a few minutes to see if they had anything marked down. When I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed that it was full, and sure enough everything was 50% off. They did not start marking down any of their stuff until yesterday morning. I almost wish that I would had gone there yesterday instead of the Dempster/Dodge store, since the Dempster store put all of their health and beauty stuff on sale the week before, where as the Green Bay store did not put anything on sale until yesterday. It was much more civilized at Dominick's today than it was yesterday. Yes, it is kind of picked over, but I still ended up spending another $10 there today. Yesterday I did not see any orange juice, and today there was lots of it, and so I ended up buying some. They still had a fair amount of frozen today, as well as canned fruit and coffee. The cereal was pretty much gone though, as well as the flour, sugar, and toothpaste. They still had some shampoo. Whole Foods is taking over the Green Bay store.

The stores that are being taken over by Jewel, are not marking stuff down, and some of the stores being taken over by Mariana's are not marking stuff down, but some are.

Yesterday while I was at Dominick's forever, I noticed that people were deciding that they did not want a particular frozen item, and just leaving it where ever, instead of putting it back where it belonged. I am sure all the stores had to throw out lots of food last night.

There were reports of people fighting over the diapers last week. I've heard that the employees get first dibs on everything, and so I don't know how much liquor is going to be available. I've heard that in some of the stores the liquor goes on sale this Monday for 30% off. At all of the stores not being purchased by Jewel or Mariano's, it goes on sale this next Friday for 50% off, along with all the produce and meat. I have been told that the stores are still receiving shipments of food from the warehouse, and so is still stocking shelves. They put out some more yogurt and cheese while I was there yesterday, and the store I went to yesterday did not have any orange juice, and the Green Bay store had lots of it today. I got a half gallon of Florida's Natural today for $1.50.

Hi- I had to go to Morton Grove yesterday, and so I stopped in the Dominick's on Dempster and Waukegan on my way home last night, and they will still stocking shelves. They had just gotten in a bunch of paper products and garbage bags and other assorted stuff, and this was the first Dominick's that I had actually seen toilet paper and garbage bags, and so I ended up buying some. When I was looking at all the boxes of stuff that were not shelved though, I did not see any drawstring kitchen garbage bags there, and I just figured they did not get any in, and I ended buying some handle ones. While I was checking out, I saw this couple leaving the store, with two shopping carts filled to the max with toilet paper and plastic garbage bags. They had taken all three cases of the Hefty drawstring garbage bags, and all three cases of the Scotts Extra Soft toilet paper, along with at least five other cases of toilet paper. I wish people would not be so greedy. There was still some frozen left, including Alexia potatoes, which I ended up getting another bag of, and they had Horizon eggnog which I love. After I got through checkout though, I realized that the eggnog was not on sale. That is okay, because I love the stuff, and it was still a little cheaper than Whole Foods. I've heard that all the stores are still getting stuff from the warehouse every night, and I heard that the Northfield Dominick's is finally participating in the sale.
