My brother's in town Monday night, staying in Skokie. I've suggested the Fireside, mostly because of the beer - not the food, but I'd like to be able to offer alternatives that are a little more interesting.

Any suggestions for a casual, not-too-expensive spot up around that neck of the woods? We're open to all ethnicities. Did someone say that Carson's Ribs closed up by Peterson?

    Thanks!

In the city there's Devon Ave. which offers many choices. Among them are: Tiffin and Afgan, and the Moroccan/Israeli spot very close to Afgan that I'm forgetting the name of. Not far from there is Essence of India and Noon-O-Kebob. I was a fist-time visitor at El Llano Colombian Restaurant on Clark and Lunt last weekend where they have charcoal roasted chicken and rabbit and there's Korean Garden north of Foster on Lincoln. Lots and lots of places, most of which I'm forgetting. Most of these places have been commented on and the material is archived here for viewing; use the search feature. Sorry for not posting all of the addresses.

Carsons on Peterson and Clark is indeed closed.

Past faves of mind from that part of the Chicago area:
Dave's Italian Kitchen (Chicago Ave just south of Church in Evanston)
Daruma on Central in Evanston (although it's just not as good as it used to be, I think)
Renga-Tei at Touhy and Crawford in Lincolnwood

The Fireside isn't a bad place for the beer and the room (and I'm also partial to the service on certain nights), but the food can be quite up and down. The last few months have definitely been down. The Edgewater Lounge at Ashland and Bryn Mawr has a nice beer list and a small, but well executed menu. If you're already thinking about going to the Fireside, you could go the extra half mile down to Andersonville and the host of places there. Hopleaf heads the list of Andersonville options.

Hai Woon Dae would be a great choice.

Larsa's on Dempster is still open (right?). What about Kabul House, also in Skokie.

I'd look up the addys for you but I'm stuck on dial-up at the moment and it's just taking way too long. :(
