My wife and I differ about the self-checkout lanes. I will be glad to see them go from our Jewel, if they do. I am in favor of giving jobs to actual people. I also believe (it may sound silly, but I hope it doesn't sound condescending, because I mean it) that checking-and-bagging is a skill, and that to treat it as something just anyone can do is to devalue it and the people who are paid to do it. Besides this, my observation has been that very rarely does a self-checker-outer not need assistance with something that goes haywire either through electrical or human error, so the whole exercise seems pointless.

My wife, on the other hand, enjoys the sense of control that self-checkout gives her, and will be sorry to see it go.

I was at Jewel last night (Niles) and will be again this week (Addison & Elston).

I noticed that the Niles store is no longer selling the Baker's Chocolate in 8-ounce boxes containing individually wrapped 1-ounce bars. They only had the 4-ounce easy-break bars. But the price was still $2.79. Guess I'll have to do my stocking up early from now on, and buy the good stuff touted on that chocolate thread.

Has anyone received one of those coupons in the weekly ad for a cheap turkey with the purchase of $XX worth of groceries? Or was this during Thanksgiving only? I haven't seen a Jewel ad in awhile.

Also, if you have a Dominick's card, Jewel is collecting them and giving you 10% off. That made up for the fact that I forgot my %#*&^ coupons and I would have gotten a nice amount off if I hadn't.

Hi Pie Lady-If you still have your receipt, you can bring in your coupons along with your receipt, and they should honor the coupons at customer service. Jewel does not have any more deals on turkey. They had some upset people at Thanksgiving time, because when they first posted the turkey deal, they did not say that you had to purchase $25, and they had some people that were just buying the turkey, and they were losing money big time on the turkeys. They got tired of losing all this money, and a few days later they started requiring a $25 purchase. The $25 included the turkey, which was usually around $10. Jewel also had some unhappy customers when they announced that you could save 10% on your order if you shopped in their store on a Bears game day, and wore any Bears apparel, and then a week later they announced that only a Bears jersey counted.

Dominick's as of last week did have Jenny-o turkey for $.49 a pound through Christmas, and they had butterball on sale for $.69 a pound. If you are going to get one their, I would get there before Friday. At some of the Dominick's stores liquor is supposed to go n sale 30% off starting today. The rest of the stores it is going on sale 50% off Friday.. Their meat is not going to go on sale until this Friday. Frankly I don't think that any of the stores other than the few that Jewel is taking over are going to have enough merchandise to remain open until the 28th. When I was at the Dominick's in Morton Grove last night, the crowds were not bad at all. They were not anything like they were Friday morning, although the couple that loaded up their two carts with tons of toilet paper and garbage bags irritated me. No wonder I could not find any drawstring kitchen garbage bags. They took them all before anybody had any chance to stock the shelves.. Why does anybody have to be so greedy? Hope this helps, Nancy

Are there Dominick's stores that are still open? Out here, where I live (NW suburbs), they all closed last Friday.

Hi- Did they run out of stuff? I regularly visit two couponing blogs that focus on the Chicago are, Jill Cataldo, and mashupmom, and there have been a lot of posts over the last week and a half, and the only stores that are not participating for sure in the sale are the three or four that are being taken over by Jewel, which includes the store on Lake in Glenview where the Glenview Naval air station used to be. I am not sure if any of the stores rumored to be taken over by Whole Foods have their stuff marked down. The Green Bay store in Evanston I heard thought it was going to remain open, and just found out otherwise, and so did not begin their markdown until Friday. I don't know if that means that Whole Foods is not taking them over or not. Both the stores in Evanston and the store in Lincolnwood and the store in Morton Grove are still open. I was just in the Morton Grove store last night. All the stores are closing at 10:00 pm though. There is a list over at mashupmom of which stores have their stuff marked down. I just found the link to Rachel's list. I noticed that Mariano's is taking over the Buffalo Grove store.

I found a Dominick's in Arlington Heights that is still open, or was tonight, but there's not much left -- mostly the handful of things that are not marked down (milk, produce, fresh meat, deli). Most of the aisles are empty, except for a few stray items and one aisle that was blocked off. That said, if anyone is fond of canned menudo or Bobak's sausage, those were among the few things remaining -- though even for those, there wasn't much.

The closing is understandable, but still sad. It was my "first grocery store" back when I moved out on my own, long ago -- when there weren't quite so many options everywhere you looked.

Hi- Actually all the stores are still getting shipments from the warehouse, but Sunday night when the Morton Grove store got in the paper products and garbage and freezer bags, people were opening up the cases and helping themselves before the one person stocking had a chance to stock the shelves. I guarantee by noon the next day, 99% of the stuff that the warehouse brought was gone. While I was there people were helping themselves to lots of toilet paper. I would stop in Dominick's if I were in the neighborhood, to see if they have any new stuff, but I would not make a special trip there, except for maybe Friday, when they are supposed to have their produce, liquor and meat 50% off. From what I have heard though, when they marked the liquor 30% off yesterday, most of the beer and hard liquor flew out the store, although there is supposedly lots of wine left. I heard people had whole shopping carts of hard liquor.

You can still use your fresh values card at Dominick's by just giving them your phone number when you check out at Dominick's. Meijer's also has a similar promo where if you turn in your Dominick's card through 12/28, you get 10% off your transaction at Meijer's. As far as I know, if you go to a full sized Meijer's store, the discount also applies to the department store side of the store, and so you do not have to buy food to get the discount. This offer is only good at the Meijer's in the Chicago area.

You can stack the 10% off at Meijer with their Santa Bucks Promotion. No stacking at Jewel and liquor is excluded.

Hi- I just noticed on both of the couponing blogs that I visit that Jewel is experimenting with their ads, and some of the stores are now called fresh stores, and they have their own 4 page ads, as opposed to the 16 page ads for the other stores. I believe there are 16 stores that are doing this. None of the stores in my neighborhood are. This is an experiment. Supposedly none of these fresh stores are accepting coupons either. They are supposed to be an everyday low price store similar to Aldi's. If you look up your stores ad, and a 4 page ad shows up, then you know that your store is one of the fresh stores. All of these stores seem to be located next to Mariano's stores, including the one in Roscoe Village on Western. This is just a trial, and from, what I understand YMMV on whether these 16 Jewel fresh stores will honor the regular Jewel ad or not or even accept coupons. There are supposedly a few Jewel stores that are not going to have any ads. Hope this helps, Nancy
