    Hi -

Spending this week in Barcelona and had a fabulous time wandering around, shopping in, and eating at the Boqueria food market. The market hides right off the main Rambla street the separates the Gotic District (Barri Gotic) from El Raval - both neighborhoods a maze of tall and narrow medieval streets opening up into compact plazas inevitably surrounded by cafes and restaurants. During the first day of our somewhat random tour of the city, we stumbled around a small corner to find ourselves at the edge of the Boequeria market around noon of our first day, right in time for a jet lagged breakfast.

But before we ate, we were surrounded by hundreds of overflowing food stalls, reportedly a primary destination off Ferran Adria when scouting out for new ingredients. Below are a few shots showing a small slice of all we saw.

Veggies. We went shopping here to set aside some food for the few meals we cooked at home. Oddly, one of the few places where mushrooms were for sale. I heard that there are stalls dedicated to just mushrooms, but we never did find them. We'll need ot be more thorough next trip.

Green veggies. Another stall, to show some variation.

For those on the run, rows and rows of individual fruit plates. Not shown are the dozens of other stalls with fruit cups, and the fruit juice stalls each with dozens of freshly squeezed fruit juices.

One over several vendors specializing in eggs. Note the Avocado colored Emu egg.

    Image

And for the hungry ones, Ostrich Eggs. Why Ostrich in Spain? I have no idea, but I saw these for offer more than once.

    Image

    To be expected, Iberico Ham.

    Image

Less expected, takeaway portions of ham (Ham Chips would you call them?) for those who can't wait to get home.

    Image

And of course, at this sea side harbor city, fresh fish.

    Image

    And Shellfish

    Image

Preserved Salt Cod reflecting the no meat on Friday Catholic traditions.

    Image

Empenadas and more for sale here.

And an interesting take on Burritos

    For dessert, Nuts and Candy

So back to our original breakfast goal, we stopped at one of the many food bar stalls and started with Sardines, sauteed in garlic, parsley.

    Image

Then what was referred to us as Potato Egg with Ham. Two sunnyside up eggs over a pile of fresh fries and covered with slices of ham.

    Image

As a side we also had sauteed vegetables, but my greedy self was too busy wolfing down the food to remember to snap a shot, but you get the idea.
