Pot Pie on the Menu at Ganja Gourmet, Denver

In Denver during the first week of January, long lines of the eager-to-be-buzzed looped outside the doors of stores selling recreational marijuana.

“It’s not easy finding weed right now” said Thomas Behler of Ganja Gourmet (http://www.ganja-gourmet.com). The rush to stock up on premium bud has been intense after Colorado legalized it for recreational use. The prices are equally intense: about $50 for an eighth of an ounce.



Behler told us that Ganja Gourmet, which had formerly been a medical dispensary for marijuana (requiring a medical marijuana card for purchase), will soon open a food service. “But we can’t actually serve food to be eaten on premises,” said Behler, because public consumption of marijuana is illegal.

Instead, “we’ll have warm dishes, carry-out food like, you know, pot pies,” Behler said with an elfish wink.

“We used to be a restaurant,” he explained, with warm food for people who had the medical marijuana card. “But then we couldn’t continue due to changes in regulations. Now, because we won’t be serving food you can eat here, we’ll be more like a supermarket than a restaurant.”

With the changes in state regulations, Behler and Ganja Gourmet plan to begin serving marijuana-infused dishes as of February 1st.

Having been awarded “#1 Edible” at Kush Con 2010, Ganja Gourmet is well-positioned to lead the movement to make marijuana a key ingredient in ready-made foods. The question is: will they taste any damn good? You'll have to wait until next month to find out.
