HASH :: a great new breakfast spot

Had a great breakfast @ HASH today.
On The Corner of Western Ave.@ Hirsch , this small spot (less than 10 tables) has loads of neighborhood charm.

The menu(s) is one big chalkboard- painted behind and alongside the counter.

The tables are self service; The idea being to order /pay first- take your "number" to the table, and when your
"number" is called out by the Men-Manning-The-Grill, you go and get your own food.

Since the menu is built around "Hash"- why order a bagel? (which looked very good as well, though)
My dining companion ordered the
Pork Bubble and Squeak
Pork shoulder, sweet potatoes & brussel sprouts served with mustard cream sauce.
(try it with bacon fat hash for $1.00 more) A VERY savory dish- the Brussels Sprouts
(could have been more -ratio-wise) were perfectly cooked and not overdone. A great HASH.

I chose the Daily Special Hash "Purple Haze"
(which-back in the day was Acid/not a Hash Brand name )-
a wonderful melange of Potato and Beets Red Onions and Basil and Greens,embellished with blu cheese,added bacon for an upcharge,
and topped w/2 smiling Sunny Side Up Egg.
I'm smiling w/pleasure just writing these ingredient together!

Overall, a very magical breakfast, served w/a side of Wheat Toast.
(The bread could have been more "interesting"-IMHO- as opposed to regular
diner-esque bread)

The owner of HASH used to own the Bagel place on Damen -whose name I can't recall- which she co-owned w/ Restauranteur Dion Antic- who
created IGGYS amongst many other places.

We will be back to this wonderful addition to Chicago's great breakfast spots.....now- if they will only be able to recreate
the infamous Ham-Off-Bone Hash of Patty's Diner (w/ the addition of Sweet Potatoes that I re-created at home, of course!)
I'll be a daily regular.
Show them some LOVE. These guys are so deserving of it.

Had a nice meal @ HASH- again.
I guess we went back-again-because, it was so good.
The S.O. had the Bubble & Squeak hash- made w/ xtra Brussel Sprouts- less Potatoes....

and I ordered the Daily Special- a Poutine, made w/shredded Pork and gravy w/pickled Japapenos & Blue Cheese- atop The Well Done Potatoes (I wouldn't really call them 'Hash" per se- more like cubed- and deep fried Potatoes)
Quite tasty- although- I still "pine" for the Ham-Off-Bone-Hash + Sunny Side Up Eggs that
I soooooo crave from long closed Patty's Diner in Skokie.

Doesn't take many customers to fill this place up- but the tables do turn quickly.
The clientele's a nice mix of mostly neighborhood folks + both entire families and couples.

BTW- the Bagels sold @ HASH are made by New York Bagel and Bialy of Lincolnwood- THE PLACE for real Bagels!

I joined friends at Hash yesterday for a quick bite. I had the Humboldt Hash (black beans, hominy, tomatoes, chihuahua cheese & chorizo served with salsa verde) with optional avocado. I liked that they fried the chorizo to get a good crispiness on the pieces. I think it would have been better with a chipotle salsa rather than the salsa verde. That didn't stop me from cleaning my plate. One friend had the chilaquiles and the other had the Ukie Hash (pork sausage, kraut & smoked mushrooms). I didn't get to sample their food, but they also cleaned their plates. They serve Dark Matter coffee for you caffeine addicts. Muffins and cookies by Fritz Pastry. I don't get to this area often, but I would go back to Hash. It was an enjoyable, tasty meal.

To be fair, I wasn't exactly offering up my plate to them.

I'm sorry to say that I'm breaking up with HASH.

I see the lines and the filled up tables on Hirsch Street, spilling over w/ Hipsters
Dogs and infants..... So- someone's happy w/ their rations at HASH.. But
After my visit there today , they won't be seeing my hard-earned $$ any more.

Is it wrong to expect that an Omlette should have melted cheese inside ( as opossed to clumped-together-shredded-Sysco-looking-"Swiss-Cheese")??
If you're "nicked" an extra buck for Sweet Potatoe Hash- as a substitution for a regular potato hash-
and the perfectly sized-cubed-Sysco-Systems-lookin-Sweet-Potatos are still hard/uncooked
on the inside- wouldn't that make you unhappy?
Add in an UN-toasted English Muffin-(a buck xtra sub. too!!!?) and their Grill Guys get a downgrade in my
Opinion.

arent troubled as much with uncooked food- or even partially cooked food,
But I do.
After bringing this to the attention of Management there
She did apologize and offer to erase our bill
But I still felt less love for this once cool corner spot in Humboldt/Wicker Park(s)
Than I had in the past ...
And since I'd brought this place to my fellow Lthforum-era felt obliged to update my impressions of this

Lots of assumptions and proclamations here, so I'll add another one: perhaps the place was never that great to begin with? In any case, when you brought the problems to their attention, they offered to comp your entire bill. That makes it seem like management is (still) very much on top of things.

Ronnie- good management- Is PROACTIVE.... Not reactive.
A Good Manager would never had let a plate of food be served
In an uncooked state- and when I'd sent the Dish back one time-
My "Toasted English Muffins" came delayed to the table-
After two requests- unToasted.
An eagle- eyed Manager would have seen a plate come back- and-
"Fixed" the issue before a customer needed to ask for the Manager.

As to "assumptions"? - my observations are based upon many years of
Carefully- crafted time not only in The Industry, but as a "Rater" for Lettuce Entertain You for
Several semesters/sessions.
