    I spied this product @ Ultra Foods on Friday, and grabbed up a bag. 18lbs for $6. From what i had read about coconut shell fuel it burns clean, hot, and is made with no fillers. kind of the lump of the briquette world.

    Gotta say I was thoroughly impressed, and am going to buy more. It turned out some killer ribs on the WSM paired with maple wood.

    burned as hot and as long as RO lump I typically used.

    Jim,

    How was the ash residue form those coconut briquettes? A few years ago I tried out a bunch of coconut shell charcoal and found it to create so much ash that I quit using it.

    That is one of my big issues with briquettes in general, the filler, and the ash. I am hoping that since these are supposed to have no filler the ash will be more like lump.

    The folks who made my grill/smoker also make extruded coconut husk charcoal. I've never used it as the required order size is a bit too big for my place. But, the charcoal is supposedly incredible for low and slow. Here's a link about it...

    I still havent opened up the WSM to see how much ash the coconut briquettes left, but I was really impressed with how it cooked, clean tasting with the maple wood I used mixed in, and it gave me 17 hours of cooking time on one rings worth.

    Im just hoping I can score a few more bags today on the way home for use this weekend.

    you were wondering about ash, I used a bout 9 lbs of these for some grilling yesterday, and the ash that is left is about the same as when i use lump. THis stuff burns as hot and as clean as lump from my couple of uses. The price went up to a little over $7 for an 18# bag @ Ultra Foods, I hope they keep stocking it.

    Wish I could find a source in the city. Here are a couple shoulders I just pulled off the grill for the 4th. They are resting in the cooler now. Smoked about 14 hour on Royal Oak w/ mostly hickory and a little maple.

    Ultra Foods in DG was out of the Coshell stuff on Friday, I just hope they get more back in since I am becoming a huge fan of this stuff.

    Burns hot, and clean, & long great for smoking or grilling. Plus its "green" and everyone knows Im all about the the "green" movement. :P

    got a great deal on the Coshell briquettes today.

    Ultra Foods had them on sale for $6.50 per 18 lb. bag. I bought 2( i should have got 10 bags), and had a coupon for $1.50 off from a friend. 36#'s of this stuff for $10.00, a little cheaper than I can get RO lump for. I can usually get 37.4 lbs of RO lump for a little over $16 @ RD. $.28/lb for coshell vs $.43/lb. on R.O..

    Ill be grilling with them tomorrow afternoon doing some brined then bbq chicken thighs and legs. Then an allnighter using the coshell and maple on the WSM smoking that berkshire pork shoulder for late lunch on Sunday. Hoping to get 12-15 hours on one ring of this stuff on the small WSM.

    never followed up, 1 ring of coshell easily got me 11 hours and could have gone longer.

    a little more ash than R.O. lump, but not as much as regular blue bag briquettes. Easily burns as hot as lump.

    I have been using this stuff exclusively now for a couple months and give it my stamp of approval(whatever thats worth), for cost, burn times, and heat. Availability is the one negative, I can only get it at Ultra Foods, however lately they have had alot of it. Plus the $1.50 off coupon for an 18# bag usually $6.50 makes it a steal @ $5.00/ bag.

    This weekend I am doing another 10# Berkshire shoulder Friday night into Saturday, Coshell, maple, and some cherry wood. Pulled pork sandwiches for an early Saturday afternoon supper. :D

    Anyone interested in coming out for some berkshire pp sandwiches? :)

    I am serious, a 10# shoulder is alot for my small family and a couple confirmed guests. I would be happy to share with some folks.

    Ill defintely do some homemade slaw for the sandwiches, and some beans of the smokercas well.

    very tempting, not missing my family's annual hog roast in Missouri though :) If it wasn't so far away, I'd drag some LTHers there with me.

    This coconut shell charcoal interests me, wonder if they carry it at all the Ultra Foods locations? or where I'd be able to get it near me. The store locator at Coshell's website is still under construction apparently.

    im not sure, at the Downers Grove location it was hit and miss, and then I emailed the store manager about it and ever since then there has been at least a pallet of it on hand.

    Coshell knocked it out of the park again.

    lit the ring around 1:15 a.m., put the shoulder on around 1:30 a.m.

    pulled the shoulder @ 2:30 p.m., 1 ring of charcoal = 13 +hours,. mercy. WSM was still chugging along @ 225, I ended up shutting it down.

    needless to say the pork shoulder was awesome, nice hickory taste, moist, and a poppin' smoke ring.

    FWIW - Tony's Finer Foods (North Riverside) carries the Coshell. Not sure of the bag size, though. It seemed small.

    finally decided to break my 3.5 month self imposed bbq hiatus(was sick of anything to do with smoked meat). Bought an 18 lb bag of the Coshell last night $5 for 18 lbs, fixin' to fire up the WSM tomorrow for the first time in a long time.

    I've seen it at Westbrook market although I don't know what they charge for it. Has anyone tried it in a BGE and if so, how was the ash compared to Royal Oak charcoal?

    great run yesterday(first time using the WSM in 3.5 months), 1/3 of a ring of Coshell, + 1/2 chimney's worth to get it going, & 2 chunks of apple. Fianlly had to shut the WSM down to go to sleep after 10 hours pinned @ 225.

    I make a point to check out charcoal at any place that sells it and on the lookout for Coshell in particular. I mentioned this to a friend yesterday evening during dinner in his East Rogers Park neighborhood and he said it was right there at Morse Fresh Market. Soon, I had my own bag, though I wish is was the price reported. I paid $5.89 for a 9lb bag but still looking forward to using it. Look up high on the western wall of the store.
