    Down with snobbery!

I heard on the news last night, these will be available until the end of November.

That's what they said last night, because they did emphasize it being a temporary menu item.

Thanks. I was curious because a recent story I'd read about this inferred that they'd be available year-round, which didn't seem accurate to me (based on another story I'd read before that).

    Hi,

At least at the Highland Park location, chicken wings are back for a limited time only. Ten wings order was $5, which seemed substantially less than when it was last available around $9-10.

I remember reading somewhere that they had a huge inventory of frozen wings left over after the promotion was over. Given the price cut, maybe they are moving inventory.

I think the Wing-Ding-like chix wings were just too hot! I didn't expect that from Mc's. They should have offered a milder wing for the kids and the Too Hot adults. Pricey as well for the frozen product, but they get away with it, as with most of their pricing (for the quality). Not sorry to see them go, but they weren't bad, just too spicy.

A friend visited a McDonald's in Gurnee over the weekend, where they charged $7 for 10 wings.

I'm almost positive the digital sign at the Forest Park McDonalds said 5 wings for $3.

I think the price-cut is nationwide to move the inventory of several gigantic warehouses filled with frozen wings. All the market experts thought these things would be successful, but they have been a pretty epic flop. Not quite on par with the Arch Deluxe, but a flop nonetheless. I think the breading was just too thick and crunchy, and the dipping sauces were just not appetizing or fit for these wings.

McDonald's slashes Mighty Wings price to sell off excess
After tepid sales during a promotion late last year left the company with what The Wall Street Journal reported was 10 million pounds of unsold wings, the restaurant operator is back with a pricing cut that's meant to remove the excess.

The Oak Brook, Ill., company is touting its plan to sell five wings for $3, a sizable discount from the initial pricing, which had each wing going for about $1. Previously, a customer could expect to pay $2.99, or perhaps even above that depending on the location in the country, for a trio of wings. Now, McDonald's has effectively lowered the per-wing outlay by 40% to 60 cents.

You should give those wings a try, they really are pretty good. I like them much better at the current price, than almost $10 for ten wings.

The breading does have some heat, though it is rather thinly applied and crunchy. I like their hot mustard dipping sauce. My Mom likes the Asian style sweet chili. If you are seeking a Buffalo style hot sauce, you would be disappointed.

The initial price point was way too high. For the same price as one wing, I could get a buffalo McChicken sandwich. Even comparing it to other chicken places, most times I can get Popeyes chicken for under a $1/piece with a coupon. That said, I did like the wings and I would order a five piece next time I'm there.

I don't know if I'd agree that it was an epic flop. The article linked to says that "about 80% of the initial wings bet of 50 million pounds did in fact sell at the higher prices, the Journal noted in December — so it wasn't exactly a disastrous failure."

Still, knowing what chicken costs at the grocery store and feeling competent to fry it myself, I wouldn't normally pay $1 a piece for chicken from McDonald's, Popeye's, KFC or anyone else. But I am curious about trying the McD's wings once (with Asian dipping sauce), so I'm glad to see the price lowered.

I had these for the first time yesterday. They were pretty good, but definitely hotter than I expected. Frankly, I'd rather have these than Hooters or BWW.

I tried them once when they were first release, but the old prices were comparable to wings at super well regarded wing places like Crisp! (factoring 1 Crisp wing = 2 McDonald's because Crisp gives whole wing) That's insane. A lower price point might work... but are they taking a hit to dump inventory, or is this a sustainable price for the item should it prove more popular at the new price?

Right now, they are getting rid of inventory. As for the future, who knows? It is hard to say that they would do it again as it was not successful at the price McDonald's wanted.

I would make one other comment. If the wings were not successful in an affluent market like Chicagoland, they will be a non starter in more price sensitive markets. For example, I stopped at a wing joint near the University of Arizona campus and they were charging $7.49 for seven large wings with your choice of loaded french fries or cole slaw.
