The movie is opening Friday, 10/25, at Landmark Century in Chicago. We bought online tickets from http://www.movietickets.com for Saturday at 4:30 (NB: Not one of the times listed in the promotion below). The Achatz/Kokonas team is offering VIP premiere packages to see the show and enjoy a party at the Aviary. From their Facebook page:

Alinea owners chef Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas, along with acclaimed director Joseph Levy, are pleased to announce the Chicago Premiere of the award winning documentary Spinning Plates.

For tickets to the premiere and the following party at the Aviary, email tickets@theaviary.com, indicating date, early or late showing, and number of guests.

Spinning plates has won Best Documentary at the Vail and San Diego Film Festivals and the the Audience Award at the Santa Barbara, Austin, Maui, and Naples Film Festivals!

On October 25-27 Spinning Plates will debut at Century Centre Cinema - 2828 North Clark Street (at Diversey) in Chicago.

Showtimes are 1:50 PM and 7:15 PM each day.

After the matinee each day we will host a celebration and meet & greet at The Aviary from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. $95 per person, plus tax.

After the evening showings we will host a nightcap party from 9:30 PM until 1AM. $125 per person, plus tax.

The price for each VIP party will include:

-- A Ticket to see the movie with reserved seating areas, picked up at Will Call.

-- Specialty cocktails, punches, champagne, and beer at the Aviary after the screening.

-- Paired hors d'oeuvres in the Aviary tradition.

-- A chance to meet Grant, Nick and Joseph and hear a few words about the movie.

Aviary VIP tickets are limited to 100 of the theater's 300 seats.

Worth bumping this thread for the exposure. The LDC and I got it from Netflix. While we had questions/issues, overall it's a very well-done documentary, fascinating behind-the-scenes looks especially at the other two places. Your heart just breaks for the Mexican couple in Tucson and the Iowa family spot is tempting enough for a short drive! If you have Netflix or some other way to get this, I'd encourage it--we truly enjoyed it.

My husband and I watched last night and we were both glad we did. Three great stories that are in one sense very different, but in another related. The owners struggles are not the same, but they all have passion.

I love the line that Grant Achatz shares at the end which sums up their common thread. I don't remember the exact quote, but it is related to the emotion and nostalgia that the owners serve with their food.

We watched this on Saturday and it was good. It can be streamed from VUDU for a few bucks. It told the tale of three very different restaurants and some of the struggles they were up against. One was Alinea, and heavily featured Achatz who discusses his health problems. The other two were places in Iowa and Arizona.

I only noticed this thread when I was getting ready to write something about Breitbach's in Balltown:

I downloaded and just finished watching Spinning Plates and loved every moment of it. While food is certainly a common theme, the film really goes well beyond food and the stories and messages are remarkably appropriate at this time of the year. If it doesn't bring you to tears, it will bring you close. Touching and fantastic-my favorite food documentary ever.
