I stopped by The Canteen today after I noticed a sign touting corned beef and cabbage.

The Canteen is a relatively small restaurant, perhaps 12 tables and a small u shaped counter with ~8 stools.

Upon entering I asked if the corned beef was homemade, they said yes.

My Rueben sandwich was quite good and I enjoyed the flavor & tenderness of the corned beef. I'd happily stop by for another in the future.

I also noticed a Cubano type sandwich on the menu for which I'm a sucker (doesn't have to be 'authentic' recipe for me to enjoy). I hope to try that soon as I find myself out Barrington way frequently now (& for next couple months).

The Canteen also has some amazingly great fresh corned beef hash. We make the drive at least once a month.

thanks for reminding me! I forgot to mention that I did ask on the way out if they (The Canteen) served corned beef hash for breakfast & of course the answer was yes.

yesterday had the corned beef hash for breakfast. This is not the chunked corned beef hash of Edgebrook Diner but more of a fine shredded style, reminds me of the hash at long closed Artemis Restaurant in Mt Prospect (corner of Busse and Golf Rd.) which was one of my favorite corned beef hash places.

My over easy eggs were done perfect and the hash was delicious. If in the area & in need of a breakfast, I'll for sure be back.
