Interesting study finds a specific gene variant that increases colon cancer risk in people who eat more processed meats and less of veg/fiber. About 1/3 of the population has this variant.

It might be nice to have a genetic test that would let me say, "Yay, I'm immune to hot dog-based risk!"

The risk of colorectal cancer associated with processed meat was increased among individuals with the rs4143094-TG and -TT genotypes (OR = 1.20 and OR = 1.39, respectively) and null among those with the GG genotype (OR = 1.03).

    Sadly I am TG.

At least I don't have the genetic variants associated with celiac disease.

Hapmap says the GG genotype is most common among Asians, though it's reasonably common among Western Europeans and Mexicans. It's uncommon among Africans.
