There are plenty of good bakeries on the southside to get doughnuts, apple fritters, etc but not many cafes to grab a coffee to go with the baked delights. Two newish cafes have opened up in Englewood and Chatham serving excellent coffee among other things.
Kusanya in Englewood brews Bridgeport Coffee and has a small and extremely reasonable menu. The decor has many repurposed materials and is very cozy and comfortable. Recently sampled the Lupe Tabasco sandwich with egg and fresh crisp veggies on ciabatta. My dining companion had the french toast which while simple was well executed. The french toast was light and not to sweet. Nice option when desiring something with only a touch of sweetness. Extremely fresh and a lighter option to many of the heavier more filling options in nearby places. They also have doughnuts from the highly regarded Dat Donuts in the case among other food odds and ends.
Fleck's Coffee Company I believe serves counter culture coffee, but I did not confirm so I could be wrong. A more standard look, but large windows allow plenty of light and you can watch foot traffic on 79th st. I was only able to sample a blueberry muffin which was serviceable but fresh. They also have a menu with prepared breakfast items which I did not get to sample. Coffee was excellent and fresh.
Though I was not able to yet attend any events, their respective facebook pages show a strong commitment to community by supporting movie screenings, community gatherings, etc. Both are much welcome additions as every neighborhoods deserves a good spot to grab coffee and relax.
