We were great fans of Cafe Matou in Bucktown and sorry to see it close. When we found out that the chef owner, Charlie Socher, had opened a restaurant in Mineral Point, we decided to try it out as soon as we had a chance to go up there. We visited last week, and dined in his new restaurant, MP Dining Company. Unlike Matou, the food is not French, but a mix of American comfort food (we saw lots of customers ordering onion rings!) and whatever Charlie wants to cook. We had, among other things, a fantastic appetizer of grilled calamari with a sauce he called Pico de Gallo, which is not quite accurate but gives the general idea. We also had fantastic shrimp and grits as well as brisket braised in beer. I would enthusiastically recommend this to anyone in southwest Wisconsin.
