For weeks, my wife has been promising to take me to an ice cream store. Today, we cruise out to Mundelein to La Michoacana Gudinos. Upon arrival, the parking lot's full and a line's out the door. For an ice cream store? Is this really possible? Is this the Hot Doug's and Edzo's of ice cream. The line moves quickly as we enter. What a find! Every thing is home made, delicious, creamy, inexpensive, with a multitude of unusual flavors. Even home made popsicles. My wife orders the Mexican caramel ice cream, just before they run out of it, and I have a creamy mango shake. If you're looking for a different dairy experience, this place is truly a diamond in the rough in Lake County. Family run and owned, this is my new ice cream destination location. On our next visit, we'll try the queso cheese ice cream.

There's another outlet in Prospect Heights, at Palwaukee Plaza, also adjacent to Monica's there.

This is so nearby and I've never noticed it. I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the heads up!

This places looks great. In the Yelp reviews, someone mentioned a coconut bar dipped in dark chocolate with fresh coconut on top... wow, that sounds good! This is nowhere near my neck of the woods, but I just might need to make a trip out to Mundelein.

The La Michoacana Empire is an interesting one. There's tons of them in the Chicagoland area while there's 1000's across the country and 1000's more outside of it. Here's an article from USA Today a few years back that features the small town in Mexico where Ice Cream is King. So much so that it's spawned 1000's of imitators. Here's a story from the Wharton School of Business about the name and how it was never trademarked thus the reason you can find places using it everywhere as no single person owns it.. Although 18 different people in the USA alone have tried too have it trademarked. That said, there are some real ones with original ties to the original family located in Chicagoland. I've been gathering a list so more on them later as it warms up. From the name of it I don't think this is one of them, but the best way to tell is the equipment used. Oh yeah the ice cream is pretty much great at all the ones I've been to, both real and spawn. Love the exotic flavors which come in everything from Avocado to Rose Petal.

My wife works with one of owners of the Mundelein store and will ask if they have other stores.

On a hot summer day it is a great pleasure to purchase an ice cold coconut bar from one of the Mexican ice cream cart pushers www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XqyGoE2Q4Y
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

There is a Paletaria La Michoacana in my town, I don't eat much ice cream but they have some crazy cheap fast food salty snacks like homemade potato chips topped with pickled onions and sour cream.

Since our softball game in Mundelein got rained out, I decided to try this place out. I drove by this place many times before, but never knew that this place sold ice cream. The ice cream and popsicle flavors are very interesting. They make their ice creams, sorbets, and popsicles in-house. I saw a lot of strange ice cream flavors. I suggest requesting a sample. The coconut ice cream which I had was excellent. The person helping us out was the owner's nephew. He was very helpful. I highly recommend trying this place out if you are in the area. One regular size scoop of ice cream in a cup is $1.50.
