I am a big fan of coffee ice cream. I love the Trader Joe version of it, but I can't always get to a TJ store. I really don't care for Breyer's and Edy's. Any recommendations for good coffee ice cream brands that can be easily found in grocery stores?

Glad you asked this question, John R; I'm a big fan of coffee ice cream too.

The best coffee ice cream (my favorite flavor too) I've had recently is Jeni's, which I had in Columbus. It tasted like fresh cold coffee and cream--just excellent. One of these days, I'm going to get over to her Southport outpost and try it there.

I also vote for Häagen-Dazs. I had some Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream this afternoon, in fact. It is also easy to find in the grocery stores. Mariano's has them in the single serving size.

I saw Dean's Chicago brick ice cream at Mariano's (Vernon Hills) today. Didn't see any other brands of it.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but if a similar question is permissible, and then back to Chicago brick -- does anyone know where to get/brands that have coffee ice cream? I've been craving it ever since my first glass of iced coffee this summer. I thought it would be easier to find, but I haven't been able to find it among the Deans, Edy's, Ben&Jerry's, and other usual grocery store offerings.

Coffee is by far my favorite ice cream flavor. Haagen Dazs makes an excellent one, in my opinion the best grocery store coffee ice cream. Breyers also makes a decent one.

There's a local gelato brand, Angelo's, based in Franklin Park, that makes IMHO a wonderful espresso gelato. Full flavored and just a touch of grit from real coffee beans make it one of my favorites. Don't know if they're in Jewel or any other big name chain. I used to get mine at Joe Caputo's Des Plaines location (now closed). I just saw it today, two pints for $5 at the Shop & Save location in Des Plaines.

In addition to the excellent suggestions above, you might try popping in to your local Lavazza for an "espesso" (sic).

Big vote for Ben & Jerry's Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch. Found at Marianos Ravenswood but haven't seen it elsewhere.
