    Hi,
I'm going to get a group together to appreciate (or not) the current incarnation of Maxwell Street market. A lot has changed since it was nominated, but I think the Mexican food there is just as good. Regardless of what I think, I think it deserves more talk good or bad, unless I'm just having trouble locating the main thread, in which case could someone point me to it?

Attendance unlimited! Let make it a big one!

    Sunday: Aug. 31st 2014

1pm - Before someone asks, no I will not make it earlier. And yes all of the taco places will be open.

Meeting at the big RED M statue as per Cathy's recommendation. It is on the northwest corner of Des Plaines and Roosevelt Road.

That is indeed insane. Maxwell Street market is up there with, if not the best Mexican food I have had in the city.

    Hi,

DAvid Hammond put together a nice Maxwell St Market Guide, 2011-2012, which answers some logistical questions related to parking.

I don't know how up to date the parking information is but regardless, taking the CTA is a good choice. I have a feeling that parking options may be limited when arriving so late (anyone have recent info on parking after noon?). Here are some comments on taking the CTA.

David Hammond wrote:Take the Orange or Green El train lines to Roosevelt. You can then walk about a mile west to Desplaines or take the #12 bus west (toward Central/Harrison) to Roosevelt and Jefferson. From there, walk less than one block west to Desplaines.

Red Line trains (underground here) also stop at Roosevelt. In addition to the #12—Roosevelt, the #18—16th-18th bus will take you from the Roosevelt train stop to Roosevelt & Jefferson.

David Hammond wrote:For a more “scenic route,” take Pink or Green El train lines to Clinton; walk two streets west to Desplaines and then about a mile south…

Definitely a worthwhile walk. For much closer train stops, take the Blue Line and get off at either Clinton or UIC-Halsted (the two are the same distance from the market). Blue gets you closer than Red, Green, Orange or Pink. The #60—Blue Island/26th bus (can be caught in the Loop) gets you closer still. A temporary rerouting will be in effect so you can get off at Taylor & Jefferson—very near the north end of the market. The #8—Halsted bus is a good option too.

Assuming GoogleMaps is right, I assume I can cross 90/94 on foot via Taylor Street or Harrison if I take the #8 Halsted bus down?

The Harrison Street bridge is under construction (thus the reroute of the #60) and I don't think even the sidewalks are open. You can take either Taylor or Roosevelt, depending on whether you want to enter at the middle of the market or the south end (where the big orange M is).

I should add that I can only consider myself 80% show-worthy because, where weekends are concerned, other family members wield what I consider to be disproportionate veto power. Nonetheless, for this event, I will start softening the ground weeks in advance. The only other time anyone knowledgeable offered to show me around Maxwell Street, the deal involved leaving home before 6 am. Alas, that plan was vetoed. I think the 1 pm time for this get-together is perfect.

    Hey folks:

Forgive me if I don't make it to this event (w/ my +1). I figure that because of the nature of the market and the number of people interested, you won't be hurtin' if a couple of people fail to show, but I figured I should let you know, in case you try and do something as silly as a roll call.

David Hammond's 2011-2012 Guide to MSM has details on how to get there by CTA, car, or bike, but not by train. I am planning to take the train down to either Ogilvie or Union Station. On Google Maps it looks like about a 10-minute walk from Union Station. Does anyone know if there any obstacles along the way (e.g., crossing under 290) that would prevent me from walking there? I like walking, but if it's not possible to cross under 290 on foot, it looks like there's a bus that runs down Clinton regularly.
