    HI,

At last year's picnic, there was a discussion which took life in this thread: E.W. Rieck's — The Loop's Beloved Beanery, 1896-1957.

Since this discussion, I have made a number of batches of Boston Baked Beans and steamed brown bread. What also helped nudge this idea along was inheriting a bean pot.

Since the weather is pleasantly cooler, I will bring a batch of beans and steamed brown bread to honor E.W. Rieck's and last year's picnic.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I agree with you, zoid. Sadly, we cannot get the stars to align to attend this year. Living vicariously through pictures will be a sad second choice.

    Hi,

    Picnic spreadsheet has been updated.

Look it over and let let me know of any mistakes. It's not too late to sign up or advise what you will bring. If you are coming with a friend, please advise their nametag and what they may bring.

    Someone asked about supplies:

If you are better at ordering take-out, then consider bringing the following:

    - Tables and chairs (we might get as many as ten benches from the park district)
    - Offer to bring bread from local bakers
    - Beverages*
    - Cheese or salamis
    - Water and Ice is always nice!*

*If you commit and later find you cannot attend, please give advance warning. People may want to keep a stash of water in case there are shortages (like a few years ago).

According to David Hammond, who graciously stored last year's unused supplies, we have on hand:
    1,000 sets of knife/fork/spoon
    100 napkins
    50 plates
    20 garbage bags
    100s of moist towelettes
    Random cans of sterno

We need plastic cups and some baby wipes.

 If you can bring a bag to collect recyclables to bring home and dispose, that would be terrific.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Yes, please!

    Cathy2:

Would there, maybe, be room for a swap area? We could bring a few bags of dried blueberry tomatoes and swap for shiso. Maybe other folks would also contribute their excesses.

We will put a table aside for people who want to share their excess vegetables, cookbooks and what have you.

I will bring yeast balls for making rice wine, which was discussed briefly here.. I made one batch that yielded about a cup of some very pleasant rice wine.

I will also have petitions for pumpkin pie as our state pie. :D

    Hi,

What we do need in the short list category: plastic cups.
If people have leftover party cups from various occasions, we very likely have enough sitting in our closets. I will bring what I have.

Ice for Joan's punch and other cold drinks would be appreciated. I will bring a cooler to store a bag or two in.

Bring water for your consumption, so then we are covered.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I'll be making a couple crostini-ish things (appetizers) and will cook a bunch of the corn if no one else has any plans for it.

It doesn't look like anyone needs a grill, so I'm going to be bringing a vertical smoker for cooking corn. I'll also have a Camp Chef 2 burner stove with a griddle. Let me know if anyone would like to either at some point. Unfortunately my +2 are probably not going to be able to make it.

    Really looking forward to it!
