Ok, LTH people, I'm looking to find a weird ingredient in Chicago, so I'm sure someone here knows where I can find it. On Top Chef Duels tonight one of the ingredients is chocolate pudding fruit. It's actually a type of persimmon native to Mexico and Central America. The outside looks like a cross between a persimmon and a green tomato, but, when ripe, the inside is dark brown and soft. Any ideas where I can find one? Thanks!

    I've never seen it.

I wonder if H Mart in Niles would have it?

I've wanted to try chocolate persimmon (also called maru) ever since reading this article almost 2 years ago. At the time, I concluded it was impossible to find in Chicago. In fact, even the mail order option linked to in the article didn't offer the chocolate persimmons that year so I completely gave up on getting them in Chicago. Hopefully someone will prove me wrong but we'll have to wait a bit for the season to start.

Thanks for the replies. This doesn't look promising, but I will have to try H Mart just in case. And I didn't think of seeing what the growing season looks like. That's probably a good place to start.

Since you're in Niles, might as well try Assi Plaza too.

Never say never, but having been to both places (and a few other large ethnic groceries), I'd bet serious money that you won't find it. Best of luck though...I'd love to hear of your success.

It turns out the growing season (according to random internet sources) is in the winter, which makes sense since it's a type of persimmon, so I won't have any updates for awhile. I did find one online seller of exotic fruit, localharvest.org, that says that they will ship it in the winter. I entered my email address and am supposed to be updated when it becomes available, so we shall see.

As long as you're considering sources outside of Chicago, try contacting Robert is Here in Homestead, FL. The fruit is actually called Black Sapote.

As G Wiv posted, they have it. Their website says the season is December & January.

You can find black sapote (chocolate pudding fruit) at Pete's Fresh Market, at least at the 47th & Kedzie store.

I wouldn't wait long, as I think the season may be ending soon.
