Decent place for steak/fish/martinis on SW Side?

Can anyone recommend a decent steakhouse (that also has fish) where one can get an adequate martini somewhere on the Southwest Side? We've got family down there, and we take them out to dinner sometimes around those parts. They haven't scoped out such places and so don't have any suggestions, though they'd enjoy going to one if we could find one

An Italian steakhouse might do the trick. Or any other sort. Thanks.

I've never been, and don't know anyone else who has been, but Mulchrone's might be suitable.

Been to Courtright's in Willow Springs--too "feminine" for what I'm looking for. More into dark wood, red banquettes and crusty old-broad waitresses, if that paints the picture.

We don't care for Bogart's, and the Homewood restaurant is two blocks from our home. What we've found is that they do serve a very large portion of meat -- but that it's not the best around. If I'm looking for a good steak, I go to Mr. Benny's in Mokena. Benny's kids are running his original location, which is located in Matteson, he's at the new place. It may be farther than you are willing to travel for a good steak, but my husband really enjoyed it for his birthday in July.

If you're looking for a great fish dinner, try Tin Fish in Tinley. We have never had a bad meal there. The servers are all knowledgeable and the food is great, portions are decent for the prices. I'm not a drinker, but the bar always seems full.

My friend from work (who lives in Oak Lawn) swears by Jack Gibbons Gardens, but I've never been, so I can't tell you for sure if it's any good. I do know the owners used to be associated with Harry Caray's, if that helps.

We went to Mulchrone's last night (thanks, gleam) and can recommend it. Party of four--all enjoyed their entrees. I had the lamb chops. On the downside, the chops were loin, not rib, and so I had to work around the bones a little. But on the upside, the meat was tender and really delicious--no complaints whatsoever! Also, the place makes a martini that would not be out of place on the north side (not to sound snobby or anything). Judging from last night, the place seems to attract a fairly sophisticated crowd. (Early on a Monday night it wasn't exactly a "crowd," but that's to be expected.) Good service--our young and friendly waitress would have fit right in at any north side place. (There I go again.) We all definitely put it on our "go back to" list.

You're right, Willkat98, we've been to Petey's, and it's not as good as it used to be.

beauford, we drove past Niko's on our way back to the Stevenson last night, and actually said "We've been driving past that place for thirty years--why the hell haven't we ever gone there?" So we will.

I've been to Nikko's on several occasions, but only to large family functions in their banquet rooms. The food on those occasions was absolutely the worst example of "hotel style banquet food" I have ever had. I'd be very curious if the stuff they serve in the restaurant portion was any good. I hope so.

Your description of the leather banquettes and the old broad waitresses cinch it, Jack Gibbons Gardens is an old road house that has been operating out of the same location since the 20's. I havent been there in years but everyone goes for the steaks. Definitely a big steak, martini and relish tray kind of place. I will have to go back soon and reort back.

I wouldn't necessarily forget about it, as the food in the restaurant might be completely different than the stuff they serve at banquets.

Krapil's also fits what you are looking for. Tables too close together and sometimes crude clientele. Had a guy with a spit cup a few tables away. Took away from a great steak.

Great flash back/retro place for good steak, fish and others. I had the Dover sole awhile back, was good. Wife went with the prime rib and she liked it a lot. The inside of this place is really cool. Worth a visit anytime for sure. The bar area is pretty need also, its got a large tree coming out of the bar...wild! Kinda funny story when we pulled up the F light was out on the large sign out front and read THE LAME...lol! The only thing that was kinda lame was the high prices for the food and the drinks, I think MGD in the bottles were $5.00
