There are not that many Argentineans in Chicago and fewer restaurants, stores and bakeries.

I was visiting the café at Eli's Cheesecake World and noticed this rather indulgent cookie, the alfajore. It was the best cookie I have ever had in my life. Light cookie dough with a dulce de leche filling. It was also costly. I never heard of this cookie nor have ever seen it anywhere else. So I investigated where I could possibly get more in the city. I found about at Lucila's Homemade alfajores which come in many kinds.

I guess this cookie is very popular in Argentina and I am shocked it is not that popular here.. maybe in the more latin cities like Miami. If anyone is looking for a really great treat or as a gift I recommend checking out Lucila's

They're available at markets all over the city and suburbs; see the list on their website for locations. (At Foodstuffs in Evanston, look for them at the cashier area.)

I've seen a booth selling alfajores at the Evanston Farmer's Market this year, but I don't recall whether or not they were from Lucila's.

The best Alfajores that I've found in the city are at GNR Mekato's Columbian Bakery. Check them out.

Steve, have you tried Lucila's alfajores? They're pretty special and I prefer Lucila's to Mekato's.

The ones at the Evanston Farmer's Market are from the Dulce Caramel Company. The owner was born and raised in Argentina, and all of their dulce de leche based products are excellent. However, they have not been there the past few weeks.

I've purchased them from her a couple of times at the Logan Square farmers' market.

I just looked at her website and Whole Foods in Sauganash is listed as a location. I'll stop by later and see if I can find them there.

But if you want them at their freshest, the farmers' market is a better option.

But if I want one today on the way home from work, Whole Foods is a better option.
