OK - I could come up with a myriad of excuses as to my lack of planning lately. Who'd believe me?

The recent discussion of egg rolls and a comment by a certain LTH'er has led me to get my act together to schedule the September meeting of the LTH North Lunch Group at:

    Golden Chef Restaurant
    600 S. Milwaukee Ave.
    Wheeling, IL 60090

Grr... I thought this day was clear, and now I have a Board of Directors meeting at 1:30 for an industry group I'm VP of... perhaps I can get to their meeting a bit late.

    But I'm in.

If it's ok, can I be a maybe? Tuesdays are usually good for me but I'll have to see how the workday shapes up before committing. If that's not acceptable, I completely understand.

    Thanks,

Oh, dear. I'd so love to join you, but I'll be driving home from Michigan on the 30th. (Going to mom's for the weekend.)

Hope you have a great turnout. I look forward to hearing what you eat.

Thanks for the suggestion -- but I'll be north of Detroit, and that's just a tiny bit too far to make it back by noon -- even if there is no construction, car wrecks, dead deer, or the usual traffic going through Chicago. I'll just hope I'm here for the next one.

But I do want you to know that I really appreciate your planning these things, Dave. I've discovered some fun, new places and had a good time chatting with fellow LTHers. Always worthwhile.

Count me in. This fits into my own personal eggroll research nicely. Their online menu claims lineage to Hi Howe, which had world class eggrolls (and other Cantonese delights) during their reign as the northwest side's go to Jewish American Chinese restaurant. Even better than Kow Kow at one point.

    Hi,

I will have to make a last minute decision or at least closer to the date. I hate cancelling, so it means delaying when I say yes.

    Sorry!

Oh man - a glorious lunch indeed. Great company and food. The LTHNLG motto.

I followed WillG's lead and ordered Singapore Rice Noodles. Excellent choice. A variety of other entrees were passed among the group. I suspect a photo of a plate of egg rolls might materialize here shortly.

To cap off a great meal, with the assistance of WillG, I actually picked next month's destination. :) Stay tuned for further details.

Thanks for taking my none-too-subtle hints on scheduling this, Dave148. A fine time was had by all. Their noodles are terrific (I hadn't previously had the chow mein noodles which they appear to use for Singapore too, but I've been a long-term fan of the chow fun). I'm glad we had a big enough table with big enough hearts for sharing. Even the sweet and sour chicken had a nice balance to it -- that's one that can quickly get into the 'too sweet' category.

And those egg rolls: I could have just ordered a couple (six?) of those and stopped. Crisp, non-greasy, and great filling.

This was perhaps the largest number of egg rolls I've ever seen in one location other than at a Chinese buffet or the LTH Picnic.

They were pretty good, but while they were non-greasy, they were non-greasy to a fault. I would have preferred just a little bit of greasiness to compliment the delicious (but shrimp free?) filling.

I agree with Steve. I'm usually good for at least 2-3 napkins at a Chinese restaurant. Hell, I didn't even stain my shirt at today's lunch!

Yeah, I have to say, that wasn't my favorite Chinese meal with the LTH northern lunch group. I didn't mind the lack of grease on the eggrolls but I thought the filling was dry and bland. And I wasn't a fan of the sweet and sour sauce (way too thin) or the mustard (not enough heat, though that could just be me--I know some of the others at the table were feeling it more than I was :))

I liked the hot and sour soup--the ingredients were nice and fresh and didn't taste like mush like most seem to--but, again, it was a bit bland. The rest of the dishes were just too heavy on the cornstarch and the meats were pretty mushy. Made me really miss that great lunch we had at Silk Mandarin a few years ago.

Nice to see everyone though and hoping to make the next one, particularly if it's at the location that you mentioned since I've never been there (not sure if I should say where yet  )

Thanks to Dave for putting it together!!

    Hi,

If the owner is the same women I met years ago, she is a dietician by training. She would certainly aim at greaseless eggrolls.

Her restaurant was the location of holiday party I attended. This party was planned in advance with the menu nuanced to the participants taste. Just as the party began, one gal loudly announced, "I'm allergic to MSG and shrimp." You could hear a pin drop, especially annoying when there was plenty of time to offer this information.

The owner chimed in about her background to assure there was no msg. As for shrimp, the few dishes would be highlighted for her to avoid. Miss pain-in-the-butts' final shot, "If I eat a shrimp and get sick, it is your responsibility to get me to the hospital." And the party resumed without any more hitches.

    Regards,
    Cathy2
