I miss few things about my now 10-years-in-the-past hometown of Detroit, but Seven Layer Cake is one of them.

For some reason, I had a hankering for a nice piece of seven layer this week and thought Kaufman's would take care of that for me. Unfortunately the nice young lady who sold me a few delicious Onion Rolls yesterday had no idea what I was asking for when I asked if they had Seven Layer Cake.

Any idea where I might find a good Seven Layer Cake short of taking the trip back to West Bloomfield and Diamond Bakery?

    Thanks.

Too bad Steve's Deli closed their Chicago location. They had it.

It sounds fabulous - but lord, what a lot of work!

You might request that this thread be moved to the "Shopping & Cooking" topic forum - someone may be able to give you a lead. You might want to give Deerfields Bakery a call, too -a search of its site responded:

"Search Results - "seven layer cake"

Results for your search are not currently on our website.
But we can make anything! Call customer service at 847.520.0068 for details."

You can actually buy one through Amazon, but it's $93.

Reading some descriptions of the cake, it sounds like the dobos torte at Jułius Meinl.

Indeed. Bennison's in Evanston would be another possibility, though their version is a little ornate - and only has five layers:

    "Dobosh Torte
Five thin layers of yellow cake filled and iced with rum-flavored chocolate buttercream. Decorated with caramel glazed marzipan fans and a yellow rose in the center."

    Whoa.

Check Tel Aviv Kosher Bakery on Devon - I have seen it there or at least a version of it

We bought some several years ago at Tel Aviv Kosher Bakery for an ex-Detroiter's birthday party. Thought it was a lot like Star Bakery's (Oak Park, Mi), which is to say, sweeeet.

Thanks for the tips. Went up to Tel Aviv this afternoon only to learn that they only make Seven Layer on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Will return, as I grew up with the Star Bakery in Detroit then Oak Park prior to the advent of Diamond Bakery in West Bloomfield.
