As I walked through the little strip mall on Buffalo Grove Rd., just north of Dundee Rd., the sign Nuts 2 U caught my eye. My first thought was that they must have been inspired by Pho U, which is about a block away. I decided to check the place out.

This is a fun little story with walls lined with bins of bulk nuts and seeds -- raw, roasted, with and without salt, coated with chocolate or glazed with sugar, plain or mixed --and just about everything you might want: sunflower and pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, pecans, almonds, hazel nuts, cashews, and more. There are also a few types of trail mix and a substantial section of dried fruits, which includes the usual raisins and cranberries, but also more uncommon fruit, such as pineapple and strawberries.

There are a few other items in the store -- candies and chocolates, almost all Russian (as is the clientele) -- but the nuts and seeds are the big draw. Good prices, too. And the nuts all seemed, by smell and, in the case of the pumpkin seeds I bought, by taste, to be very fresh -- and I've never seen the store when it didn't have customers, so I suspect product gets turned pretty quickly.

It might not be worth a trip to Buffalo Grove just for this store, but since it's just around the corner from America's Market and only about a block from Chaihanna, and two doors from a good Russian Deli (Allegra), it has the potential of making any visit to the Buffalo Grove Rd/Dundee Rd. interesection a reasonable foraging opportunity.

actually, for me it is worth a trip to buffalo grove for their delicious dried pears. i've got a good friend in BG, so i try to combine visits to both. nuts 2 U opened a short lived store on chicago ave. in ukrainian village last year, which i was delighted to hear, except they didn't have dried pears! justjoan

Stopped by there this afternoon to restock my wife's cache of almonds. 25% off remaining stock sign in the window. The store is closing this weekend. About a 1/3 of the usual inventory is left on the shelves.

That's a pity. I always hate to see fun, interesting shops like that close.
