The old Best Kosher plant at Pershing & Morgan will be the new home of Vienna Beef. I don't know when they will move, or even if it's a done deal, but it seems only proper for them to return to the South Side (they were on S Halsted from 1894 to 1972) after a brief spell up north.stevez wrote:But isn't Best's Kosher owned by Vienna?
I guess stevez is right after all: Best Kosher—the old factory, that is—is owned by Vienna.

FYP with superfluous definite article.

I think we agree Hillshire Brands has applied to register the Best's Kosher trademark (your link is the same as the one in my earlier post, #900). I'm not sure I understand the part about Sara Lee and Best.
As I wrote above, I don't think Sara Lee exists any longer as a distinct corporate entity, though Sara Lee brand products continue to be sold by Hillshire Brands (which is now a subsidiary of Tyson Foods). Around the time they transformed into Hillshire Brands in 2012, Sara Lee extended their registration of the Best's (not Best) Kosher trademark. I assume Hillshire Brands applied to register the same trademark in 2014 simply because Sara Lee Corporation had ceased to exist.
Are you saying Best Kosher is a different brand than Best's Kosher?

. . . . as well as a very good veal bratwurst and they sold 5# bags of irregular beef jerky at a ridiculous discount (in addition to dogs, polish, bagel dogs , etc.).

I agree that these are local colloquialisms. I hear Jewel, Jewels, and the Jewels (I haven't *heard* "the Jewel's," but then, you can't hear apostrophes, can you?). A couple of weeks ago, a friend wrote on Facebook, "I rushed home from the Jewels just in time to see the international space station fly over." Similarly, when Dominick's was in business, I'd say and hear people say Dominick's and the Dominick's with close to equal frequency. I presume that making Jewel plural or possessive (Jewels or Jewel's) is a parallelism with Dominick's and that the use of the definite article with both is the result of substituting the store name for "grocery store."
JeffB wrote:I don't think adding the article and possessive is limited to the Jewel's Dominick's situation. I think people used to go over by the Ward's back in the day, if the Zayer's didn't have it.

The brand "Kosher Zion" was owned by David Berg. I am pretty certain that the hot dog served by Lulu's on Taylor (@ Ogden) was, for many years - including the year for which my letter to the Sun-Times was composed, a Kosher Zion frank. {It's now a branded Vienna Beef.}stevez wrote: But isn't Best's Kosher owned by Vienna?
