My wife was eating at Think tonight and was told Honey 1 has been shut down by the city. Permit issues...

    That sucks.

I have this theory that business at Think has taken a drastic downturn due to people arriving, smelling the smoke, and changing their minds about whether they want artful artisanal Italian food-- or a juicy, smoky Rib & Hot Links Combo.

    Jglynn,

    Absolutely untrue.

I spoke on the phone to Robert Jr. and Honey 1 will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, at 11am as always.

Ironically, as soon as I read your post, I started craving Honey 1's tips and links, I know where I'm going for lunch tomorrow.

    "That sucks."

It only sucks more if the employees/management of Think are waging some negative PR war against their new neighbor. If that's the case, such a sinister business strategy will backfire on them in volumes.

I think if it was some negative PR war they'd have said health code issues, not permit issues. My guess is that they're just confused.

And dammit gary, you need to stop posting pics of bbq 12 hours before honey 1 opens. It just makes it impossible to concentrate.

I has a nasty run in with the valet parking company for Think when I went to H1 last weekend.

We had pre-ordered and parked on the sidestreet next to Think, where a city sign stated "15 minute parking only", to run into H1 to pick up or goodies. Then a Valet parker for Think came out and said the spot was for Think customers only, and that he'd have us towed if we parked there.

of course we moved the car, but I wondered if Think was a little put off by people doing just this...(think was , btw, fully seated on this particular sunday night)

FYI...The guy working the counter at Honey 1 said it's okay to park in the bank's lot for pick up last time we went there....

Where do these valets get off? If the City says 15 minute parking is legal, it's legal for anyone and everyone who has an otherwise legally licenced and operated motor veehickle. I'm tempted to go up there and park in that spot just to get on their nerves.

I'll second that, Antonius. In fact I'd be more than tempted to order to go, sit in the spot and eat, moving my car forward and backwards every 15 minutes but I can be an ass that way :)

I'll pile on and third it.

On a slight tangent -- does Think do take out too? Otherwise, why the territorial pissing re: a 15-min spot?

They don't, at least not as a matter of course.

I think it isn't Think being protective of the spot, but the valet company. They may use it as a holding pen for some cars before they find somewhere to drop them, or as a space for customers to pull in for valet service.

Yes, well, I've had the valets block me in all directions in Greek Town. No amount of swearing and screaming to move the cars or threats to the police scared them. Hmmm...

Actually, it's not, as my wife's business found out after trying very hard to get a 15 min zone in front of their shop on Wabash and Congress so that customers could come and pick up books. It's only valid for those cars displaying some sort of special permit for delivery or valet, and numerous patrons were ticketed before they could get it clarified.

Actually, that 15 minute zone on Wabash & Congress is pretty unusual. As a driver for a messenger service for 11 years, I've parked in every loading zone and 15 minute flashing zone from Roosevelt to Oak Street, and that sign on Wabash was the first and only 15 minute zone I ever saw that specified that it was a commercial loading zone. Before that signage went up, that was just a loading zone for several years.

Anyone can park in most any other 15 minute flashing zone.

    Tapler:

Thanks. That's always been my understanding; indeed, such zones in mixed residential/commercial areas (e.g. Printers' Row) are naturally and continually used by both business and private vehicles and I've never seen the latter ticketed, though that is a neighbourhood where the police regularly make walking ticket-gifting tours.

    Commercial loading zone, that's different.

The City's website on parking regulations is down but I've asked one of my buddies who is with the CPD for confirmation regarding Tapler's and my interpretation of the law with regard to these parking zones.

I would have gone right inside to Think and complained to the manager on duty. And if the valet touched my car I'd be pulling his small intestine through his mouth.

BTW, I hate valet parkers

I did go into Think with the intention of speaking to the management, however, as i said - every table was full, and i didn't want to inconvenience them because of the rude valet person (gold star valet). and trust me - if it had been me, instead of my fussy friend driving, i would have indeed sat in that spot for 15 minutes, and then come around again for another 15.

We simply double parked in front of H1 and ran in.

You know how some people bring donuts to their office? I decided to treat my crowd to an afternoon snack of Honey 1 ribs today. I'm pleased to report that they were open. I even found LTHer Joel behind the counter seeking the secret to Mr. Adam's wings.

The ribs were awesome. Everyone enjoyed them. And H1 is definitely open.

I kinda know the management there, and I don't think Rivka or Chef Omar would've felt inconvenienced by you, but rather pissed off at the valet's rudeness. Even thought the valet service typically is only a contractor and not an employee of the restaurant, they are the first impression a diner has of the establishment, regardless. So I'm sure the management of Think wouldn't abide rudeness or any other bad acts by the valet. Even if you weren't actually planning to eat there tonight, I don't imagine you'll be rushing back for more of the same treatment, and it may have sullied your opinion of Think (or prejudiced your opinion if you've not yet eaten there). So, I'm sure they would've wanted to know. You may want to send them an email, if you think it rises to that level.

By the way, I haven't been to Think for a long while (need to get back) -- but it's amusing to learn that they NEED valet parking! I always think of them as a hole in the wall establishment, but ever since they opened up the extra room in back (probably doubling the tables), and with the Check Please effect, I guess it was inevitable they would need parking assistance.

I haven't been since the Check Please effect either, when there was a 3 hour wait for a table. That was a lot of fun.

I'm glad the business has stayed solid for them.

We may be thinking of different signs, but the one in front of 418 S. Wabash gives no indication of any restrictions; it looks exactly like any other, but the traffic enforcement ladies were quite... emphatic that it was not for non-commercial use.

They must have changed the sign then. There was definitely a period of time when it said 15 minute flashing zone for commercial vehicles only. I parked there a lot to pick up at Robert Morris College at 401 S State, and always thought it was a strange sign (though I wasn't complaining!)
