Hi All. I am writing to ask if any of you can reccomend a place where we can take my father-in-law for his 65th birthday. There will be 9 of us in the party. We were thinking about Maggiano's but it's a little too chainey for our liking. Any one know a good Mom and Pop Place that serves homemade food?? Looking for Italian, American, or any thing else. The only restrictions are please no Indian or Japanese.

I haven't seen too much on my search so I thought I would throw this out this way.

    Thanks for all your help.

Francesca's Tavola is a local chain, not exactly a Mom and Pop, but I have entertained relatives there. It's comfortable and reliable.

Regina's in downtown Arl Hts serves great veal and lasagna. Small and a little pricy but very very good. Usually the line out the door is a good sign!

With Francesca's Tavola, you either love it or hate it. I am not a fan. It also gets pretty loud there. I am never content w/the menu selection.

For Mom & Pop, I really like Amore Mio. It's on the edge of Palatine and Hoffman Estates. It is reasonably priced and authentic. However, don't be deterred b/c it is in the strip mall w/Jewel. The interior is nice. I have been there a few times & ordered Melenzane Parmigiana and Capellini di Nicola.

I also really like Yanni's for Greek, which is very similar to the restaurants you'd find in Greektown. I always get the leg of lamb or the chicken wrapped in phyllo.

Their are two places that come to mind for American. A little pricy, but it is his 65th birthday. The Millrose is very nice and the food is good and the Barn of Barrington . I have not been to the Barn of Barrington in a couple of years, but it has always been very good. Both are not far from Schaumburg. Have a great time!

You might like Joe & Giuseppe, a sunny little hole-in-the-wall with excellent escarole soup, eggplant parmigiana and cannoli, and substantial portions.

Oh, I forgot to suggest Joe & Giuseppe. I didn't know if they were still in business, b/c there was rumor that they might close down. So happy to hear that it is still up and running. Love their ceasar salad - very fresh ingredients. With a group of 8, I would try to make reservations b/c they are pretty small.

I confess I have never gone away from there thinking "I must go back and have the xyz as soon as possible." It's more the kind of place I can take older relatives and be pretty sure there will be no problems.
