You know who should be in the Rock n Roll Hall Fame? Joan Jett or NRBQ?

Well, we can debate that and various other topics of great import when we meet for meat on Thursday, January 29 at Pampas, a relatively new South American steakhouse in Elmwood Park--as new enough that no one seems to have been there even though it's been there for over a year. Dinner's scheduled for 7 PM.

Lest you're waiting to respond because you don't want to be the first, note that there's about 4 of the OP kids, plus honorary west-sider Ronnie K on the list so far.

I'm waiting for the votes to come in on Joan Jett or NRBQ. There I know which side of the fence I'm on (some sort of smirky smiley).

Can't commit, but I'll definitely try to make it.

I hope to be there, but it very much depends on whether my wife gets out of work close to on time or not since I'll be taking care of our kiddos until she gets home and then coming from Naperville. With the way work has gone for her lately though, I'd say it's a 50/50 chance of working out.

Can anyone who knows the area recommend a nearby spot to grab a drink beforehand, preferably a place with decent spirits or a solid tap list? I will probably be early since I want to avoid sitting in traffic and may have some time to kill before dinner.

    Thanks,

You'll either love or HATE the Kat Klub
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/kat-klub-chicag ... =date_desc

Think of the old man dive you used to go to when you weren't 21 yet but they didn't give a shit about ID, except everyone is really nice. You sure won't get anything fancy but there's parking out front and the side streets. I kinda like the place but I admit some of my more refined friends refuse to revisit it. It's not for cocktails, but if you want to kill some time I think it's worth it just for the experience.

Don't say I didn't warn you though, this is shot and a beer territory.

Well, not all *that* close, but also not terribly far away is Autre Monde: 6727 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, IL 60402
    (708) 775-8122

(And you could nip over to Big Guy's Sausage Stand (7021 Roosevelt) for a pre-Festival-of-Meat appetizer. :-) )

Maya del Sol and Axcan both do well with mezcal; Piggyback Tavern smells great and has a good list (http://www.piggybacktavern.com/beer.html). Scratch Kitchen across the street from Piggyback for cans including some bargains (http://scratchfp.com/drinks). Kat Klub bears a revisit soon - hadn't thought about that in years.

Autre Monde is as good as it gets out here for non-agave spirits (I'll be there Friday for a date night). Sorry I can't make this main event Thursday but will look forward to the reports.

I used to go to Caffe Italia a lot, before it's fire and expansion into a more "normal" place--if you know Harlem Av coffee shops you kinda know what I mean.* I'm not sure about the cocktails per se, but you would feel very appropriate downing camparai's. I'm pretty sure there's a few other similar types of things on offer. It's on Harlem just north of Grand, pretty much across the street from where Caputo's used to be (and is now Planet Fitness).

*I'd send you to my current place but they won't serve you booze as they don't know you.

Yeah, a very fun night. Thanks, VI, for putting it together.

I thought the sweetbreads and cross-cut shortribs were good, too. Those mixed vegetables were classic Birdseye, though.
