So the forecast right now shows 1 to 3 inches of snow on Sunday. Just wondering who might cancel due to snow and weather I should choose an alternate date?

It is your call. If I cannot make it, it will not be related to weather.

Forecast still sounds ok, so Ruth, Frances and I will be there with the following golden offerings:

mrsm - bread pudding for dessert and zwiebelkuchen (kind of an onion custard tart in a bread crust) to contribute towards dinner

    Ruth - Lemon meringue pie

    Fran - pear tart (?)

Dinner will consist of Cauliflower and Cashew Soup with Apple and mrsm's Onion Tart. Does anyone have any beverages of choice? I was thinking of making some matcha green tea lattes, have assorted tea and coffee. What type of soft drinks does everyone like?

    Hi,

I am making butterscotch pudding. It is a recipe I wanted to try, you are my excuse and it fits the golden theme.

I drink Coke, though I drink other stuff, too. Don't get it just for me. I can live with whatever is available.

I was in Carol Stream last night until 9 pm. I came home possibly at the worst of this storm, which was not much to write about.

    See you all soon!

Delicious food and really enjoyable company, thank you Ingrid for your generous hospitality.

Here is the recipe for the buttermilk ice cream from Claudia Fleming's Last Course. Unlike Smitten Kitchen, I do not deviate from the ingredients. I have developed what I consider to be Best Practices for making ice cream so if you are going to make this, PM me and I will share what I have put together with hat tips to Lebovitz, Britton Bauer, and CI.

Oops, I would love the recipe for the onion gruyere tart, Ottolenghi's cookies, the bitter marmalade cake, the chocolate candy bars, the pear tart, and the lemon meringue pie.

Oh my gosh! what fun! so great to see new faces, and old friends, and everything was beyond delish!
Thank you so much Ingrid for being such a gracious hostess.

Here is the rum cake recipe:
    http://www.alwaysorderdessert.com/2011/03/rum-cake-from-scratch.html

I did buy boxed vanilla pudding (the cooking type, not the instant type)
My only deviations were I subbed pecans for walnuts (personal preference)
Instead of all dark rum I used 3/4 Capt Morgan spiced rum and 1/4 dark rum (again personal preference.
I also made the cake Friday night, so everything would have time to soak in and "get married"

Today is the First Day of the Bahai Fast. A couple of people were asking at the dessert exchange bout the Faith's position on being vegetarian.

    Here you go:

Regarding the eating of animal flesh and abstinence therefrom, know thou of a certainty that, in the beginning of creation, God determined the food of every living being, and to eat contrary to that determination is not approved. For instance, beasts of prey, such as the wolf, lion and leopard, are endowed with ferocious, tearing instruments, such as hooked talons and claws. From this it is evident that the food of such beasts is meat. If they were to attempt to graze, their teeth would not cut the grass, neither could they chew the cud, for they do not have the molars. Likewise, God hath given to the four-footed grazing animals such teeth as reap the grass like sickle, and from this we understand that the food of these species of animal is vegetable. They cannot chase and hunt down other animals. The falcon hath a hooked beak and sharp talons; the hooked beak preventeth him from grazing, therefore his food also is meat. “But now coming to man, we see he hath neither hooked teeth nor sharp nails or claws, nor teeth like iron sickles. From this it becometh evident and manifest that the food of man is cereals and fruit. Some of the teeth of man are like millstones to grind the grain, and some sharp to cut the fruit. Therefore he is not in need of meat, nor is he obliged to eat it. Even without eating meat he would with the utmost vigour and energy. For example, the community of the Brahmins in India do not eat meat; notwithstanding this they are not inferior to other nations in strength, power, vigour, outward senses or intellectual virtues. Truly, the killing of animals and the eating of their meat is somewhat contrary to pity and compassion, and if one can content oneself with cereals, fruit, oil and nuts, such as pistachios, almonds and so on, it would undoubtedly be better and more pleasing. (‘Abdul-Bahá, Lights of Guidance, p. 294)

If I've made any mistakes in the descriptions, please feel free to correct me. Also, Francis had brought copies of the recipe for her Pear Tart. Let me know if you would like a copy and I'll forward it to you. I apologize for not having a photo of Cathy 2's Butterscotch Pudding. It came out late and I totally forgot to take the photo.
