Looking for suggestions where to go for the best donuts in the western suburbs ( DuPage County } Most all the old time tradional bakeries are now long gone. Remember SpudNuts on spring Road in Elmhurst? They closed in the late 70"s and I have yet to find anything as good as they were. Any suggestions?

This article mentions Dunk Donuts in Melrose Park, a couple miles east of the DuPage County line:

Chicago's 10 must-eat donuts, as picked by donut experts

Disclaimer: I have not been there.

Kirschbaum's Bakery in Western Springs (around the corner from Vie). They don't have a lot of varieties because they are not a donut shop; they're a full service bakery, but the chocolate ones I've sampled are among the best in Chicagoland.

Also, although maybe a little farther north than you are looking for, is Jarosch Bakery in Elk Grove Village. I don't think their donuts are as quite as good as Kirschbaum's, but they are still worthy, as are most of the other baked good they offer.

    Kirschbaum's Bakery
    825 Burlington Ave
    Western Springs, IL 60558
    708-246-2894

    Jarosch Bakery
    35 Arlington Hts Road
    Elk Grove Village, IL 60007

Most, but not all. Jarosch Bakery, which Steve mentions (and I've been to, although I didn't get donuts there), has been around since 1959, and it is indeed an old-time traditional bakery - similar to Bennison's, Dinkel's, etc. I haven't been to Kirschbaum's Bakery, which he also recommends, but it's been around since 1953. Both of these bakeries are still owned and run by the families that first opened them (i.e. by descendents of the original individual owners).

These are out of your territory, but I thought I'd add them to the thread:

    Hahn's Bakery
    303 Franklin Street
    Geneva, IL
    630-232-8548

Family-owned by a family that's had bakeries for 3 generations I think. The traditional varieties of donuts are so good. FYI they are at the Wheaton French Market during the summers.

    Harner's Bakery
    10 W State Street
    North Aurora, IL
    630-892-4400

Another family-owned business that's been around for over 50 years. The donuts are great, but the real winner is their butter pecan coffee cake. They also have a restaurant and feature pig roasts the first Friday of the month.

Also outside of your dupage county reco, but my favorite donuts out in the suburbs is from Roll N Donut in Elgin.

One of the better apple fritters I've had not from Old Fashioned Donuts.

I can vouch for Dunk Donuts in Melrose Park - great donuts, and I second Kirschbaum's Bakery in Western Springs, it's really great so don't stop at just the donuts.

Also not in your area, but arguably the most well-known donut place in the Chicago suburbs:

    Spunky Dunkers in Palatine

I assume this is related; I haven't been to either so I can't testify to quality:

Hands down Kuppie's Bakery on St, Charles Road in Villa Park. They have glazed Cronuts for over 10 years. Their Paczkis are the best I have ever had. It's in the same strip mall with Mike's Market. Just west of Rte 83. It is the last old school bakery in the Elmhurst area.

I am not a fan of dunk donuts. I have had more than a few stale offerings there.

If you go to Kuppie's make sure to stop in Mike's Meat Market next door.
Very nice people, very good products.

Kuppie's is tiny and right next to the Ace Hardware. It's easy to miss because it's way at the back of a parking lot in a strip mall. I love their coffee cakes.

I love the Kirchbaum's cake donut with chocolate frosting. It's a dead heat with Weber Bakery's version.

Recently? I'm not much of a donut person, but I did go there about a year ago and what I had was awful - undercooked. (It was a pumpkin donut, not an apple fritter.) If they've improved, I might give them another try.

Home Cut is my Favorite for an old fashion sour cream donut. I have to take a quick detour any time I am driving on I80 through Joliet. Pretty sure Jimswside is the man who turned me onto the place.

Not in the target area, but other longtime bakeries still open include Roeser's in Chicago (1911), Dinkel's in Chicago (1922), Swedish Bakery in Chicago (1928-29), Weber's in Chicago (1930), Tag's in Evanston (1937), and Bennison's in Evanston (1938).

I don't know where DuPage county ends, but I've always been a fan of County Donuts on Roselle in Schaumburg. Not really fancy, just good old fashioned donuts.

Sweet Mornings Café in Carol stream. I have not been there yet.

Also Busy Bee in Downers Grove had wonderful paczki so I would think their donuts would be good.

I asked the person at the Arlington Heights location why the donut prices were not the same as the Palatine location. I was told that the two locations are not under the same ownership.

FunkyFrank - Any relationship with Funky Java next door? One of my favorite coffee places.

Thank you to all that responded to my query. I've note all places mentioned and will be planning a couple of road trips this spring to check them out. I've been to Mikes Meat Market a few times for steaks, but never noticed Kuppie's. It must be quite small !
