Having come into Chicago from my home in Libertyville to wish a former colleague well on her retirement, I was thinking of some place to grab a sandwich to take out since I had an appointment back near home. I remembered this post and like the writer, only had the pizza there in the past. I ordered the meatball on garlic bread with sweet peppers. Open face meant two long slices of garlic bread with four meatballs on each. There was no way to put these together to form one sandwich. If I had two more slices of bread, I could have made this into two sandwiches. The meatballs were terrific as were the peppers. For my taste, the garlic bread was too strong, somewhat overpowering the meatballs. I would certainly get this sandwich again but with plain bread.

took me a little over a year, but I got the crave for a BAM on the ride into work - beat out eggrolls and fried rice on this day.

fantastico: I havent had many beefs or meatball subs in the past few months- this combo of those two items hit the spot, Went with the 6" BAM tender beef, juiced roll, nice meatballs, oily peppers.:

Has anyone had the Focaccia Meatball Sandwich at Charlatan? Their meatballs are fantastic and their focaccia is even better so I can only imagine..

A few weeks back I tried to go to The Brown Sack, home of the best meatball sub in Chicago. But it is closed! As in not open. No longer in business. Gone to the great Sackland in the sky. Taken to a farm in the country. No longer. Gone!

As was detailed on this thread, it was supposed to have been sold last fall but I guess that either didn't happen or the new owners couldn't make a go of it. :(

    Hi..

Not a big meatball person.. a once in a while guilty pleasure.. I was shopping at Caputos grocery on Harlem and Grand in Elmwood Park. Towards the front of the store they have a little café that serves pizza, sandwiches. I had to wait for someone so I decided to order lunch and for the heck of it ordered a meatball sandwich. It was really good. It was outstanding. In fact I went back a couple times that week .. it was that good. Maybe it was because I didn't have meatballs in a long time and it just hit the spot that week.. but they were good.

My other favorite meatball sandwich is the fried meatball sandwich at Dannys Deli in Melrose Park and now they are being served at Paulas Café in Franklin Park.. Paula is the ex chef at Dannys Deli.

I've really been meaning to try that fried meatball sandwich at Danny's. My only trip there was for the breaded steak, which was unusual and great. A wonderful little spot.

Since the fried meatball sandwich is one of Paula's signature dishes, it makes sense to go to her brand new place for it. And it's only $5 for the month of March (same deal for her other sandwiches except steak).

It's an excellent sandwich and a terrific deal. She also offers a more traditional meatball sub that I'll bet is really good too.

Meatball with sweet peppers and mozz from Albano's on Roosevelt in Cicero.
Really good beefy meatballs. A very respectable sandwich if a bit heavy on the cheese. A LOT of food for $6.59 out the door. You pretty much have to use a knife and fork, next time I'll ask them to go light on the cheese.

It's really great but it's seriously about a day's worth of food. I had to take a nap this afternoon and I'm thinking dinner tonight may just be an apple and a handful of cashews

I visited an Italian Deli close to my home on Belmont Avenue.. Nottoli and Sons.. It is a sub shop and Italian Deli. They have some outstanding meatballs and Italian sausage.

no....I didn't even see the cannoli cup cakes.

Now I have to go back and check those out. It is a very small place but it is quaint. I was there at lunch time during the week and there is a crowd inside getting their sandwiches.

    Thanks for the tip.

Paula was the owner of Danny's Deli, not only its chef. Paula's is the new "Danny's" Old Danny's only has the name.

It's not in Chicago, but if you are up on the north shore, get a meatball sandwich from Moccio's in Highland Park. It is on Deerfield Rd., across the parking lot from Jewel, next to the PetSmart. Bobby and his boys make a mean meatball sandwich, with a goodly amount of garlic and soft, fresh bread.

Haven't had the fried meatball sandwich during any of my many visits to Cuzzin's or my lone visit to Paula's (never been to Danny's), but the meatball sub I had at Paula's today was the best meatball sandwich I've ever had - three very delicious and not too dense meatballs, tasty marinara, melted provolone, a little extra marinara on the side and a roll just soft enough to hold the sandwich together - absolute perfection. I don't recall having had this when Cuzzin's was around (Oakton just west of River Road in Des Plaines). But I will absolutely need to return.

Had this for lunch today. Outstanding sandwich in a great place. I'll be back to work my way through their non-sandwich offerings, too. It's lasagna-fest this month. The crusty old broads (sorry, I can't think of a more appropriate way to describe them) at the next table ordered that for lunch and each of them polished off a ploughman's share with a polenta and gravy chaser. It looked great, and they were lots of fun to talk to.

The right-out-of-central-casting staff was knowledgeable and a hoot to watch as they interacted with the regulars.

Had a large (8") meatball sandwich with provolone and hot peppers from Conte di Savoia for lunch today, and it was terrific. Three large meatballs, and just enough brightly flavored tomato sauce. The meatballs are flavorful and have a nice texture that isn't too soft but also not too firm. I believe with the cheese and peppers my sandwich cost about $7.50. Also, they have bread options and D'Amato's is one of them.

Just my opinion, but this is a better meatball sandwich than Bombacigno's or Bari (both of which I like).

Not the best Meatball sandwich in the area, but it does a good job at scratching the itch, is any Portillos which has a Barnelli's attached to it. It's under $7 and comes with melted mozzarella and is very tasty!
