After posting today, I decided to swing by for dinner tacos. There were slight differences about the space, most of which I couldn't list. Small familiarities missing, such as there were no diet beverages, different tortillas, but also strange was that there were no familiar faces in the place. It was like a twilight zone, walking into an old family home to find another family my family's place, acting in the same way as if nothing changed. It was eerie.
The tacos were definitely different. Most notably, they do not serve barbacoa, lengua, or birria on week days under this new management. TC always had barbacoa, and lengua, both of which were my favorites. This was very sad. Really all they had to offer fresh was al pastor, and I think chorizo, and the steam tray offerings, including some old asada steaming in some broth. This all sounds like a deal breaker, but surprisingly the al pastor, was quite good. Similar to the original TC recipe, but firmer and sliced thinly. It was still made from shoulder meat with the fatty chunks, though leaner, but not dry at all. It had nice crispy bits mixed with tender meaty slices. The spicing was milder on all accounts than the original TC recipe, less spices, and less salt. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, and if it's consistent I'm happy to have another decent option around. I won't be there quite as often simple for the fact that they don't have the barbacoa, lengua, or birria on weekdays, I only hope they do a decent job of those on weekends. For all the microwaved-tortilla objectors, they griddle the tortillas on an oiled griddle.
Part of the secret of a success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.
