Our two nights in Lucerne, Switzerland were only supposed to be a way station, a stop-off respite from our Paris to Florence rail travel. But we had beautiful, albeit chilly, weather to tour this 900-year old port city, and were able to totally immerse ourselves for a short time in Swiss culture and the picture-postcard scenery. There were no off-smells, no panhandling, just CLEAN. Hell, our hotel room’s bathroom had a heated floor! I kept saying to my wife, “…you’ve got to hand it to the Swiss…”
The river Reuss and the Chapel Bridge.
My wife buying pickles from a street vendor along the Reuss River.
At the Hotel Waldstaetterhof, directly across the street from the train station, I enjoyed fresh-as-fresh-can-be pan-fried perch from Lake Lucerne.
Even in 40 degree weather, plenty of hardy Swiss folk were dining al fresco under a strong late winter sun. We enjoyed a pretzel roll with steamed beef, slivered onions, and a dill tartar sauce at Rathaus Brauerei, along with a wonderful glass of their house lager. Perfect consistency of the roll, unlike anything I’ve seen in the States. Utterly delicious.
