I had a very nice endive salad for lunch @ http://www.commonwealthchicago.com/ as D. Hammond mentioned that the food was better than it has to be. True dat! Go and eat!

They got my hackles up by charging me an extra $2 to have my Templeton served "neat". I questioned the upcharge and was told it was because the serving size is increased. I know what a shot is and there is no way this was a +25% pour. Is this a common (!) practice? I call BS. Nobody was willing to take responsibility or offer a better explanation. The food was good enough so that I'll still return....someday.

I haven't noticed a 'neat' upcharge there before, but it's not all that uncommon (although I agree it's B.S.). I've also been to one or two places that charge extra for ice/rocks so it's hard to make heads or tails of this.

The pour should be the same regardless of how it's served. The upcharge is a dealbreaker IMO. Win the battle, lose the war.

I know from one of my bartender friends that many places have these rules in place:
Single/Shots is 1.5 oz of booze
Neat/Rocks is 2.0 oz of booze

Neat is an upsell from a shot.

I don't think I've ever been to a bar that does that but maybe I just don't pay close enough attention. I do know many places that offer multiple sizes of pours and the customer can choose which they prefer, served in any manner they prefer, with no upcharge for rocks, neat or what have you.

What else would you expect from a restaurant proudly flying a "Dallas Cowboy Country" sign in the window?

Ok, it's most likely blue and silver in actuality but that is most definitely a red flag.

Actually, I think this is pretty common--you'd really only notice it if you ordered first one way, then the other and saw the different charges on the bill. but I see no problem with charging more for "neat" if it's a larger pour--and my understanding was that it is typically a larger pour. If it's the same, that would be ridiculous.

I agree that charging more for a larger pour is legit. My question is why wouldn't the pours be the same? It makes no sense whatsoever. Maybe that's what Cowboys' fans are used to?

I'm not a bartender so this is NOT a technical answer but I always thought that a neat pour was larger because, without the ice, it looks so puny in the glass. A shot, in a smaller glass, and not sipped on, was the same size as the rocks pour. Not sure if any of this is accurate. Just my bystander's impression.

There is apparently an entry button on their POS system (?) for "Neat" which I noticed when I got my itemized bill. When I asked the bartender/waitress why there was this charge she said she would ask a manager. There was no indication that she knew she was supposed to pour a larger serving. This is definitely a game changer for me, regardless of whether or not cowboys are involved.
