According to an email I just received, Rustic House at 1967 N. Halsted will close after service on June 6th.

While driving down Larabee this morning I noticed a sign on the Terry's Red Hot shack at North and Larabee that says "Coming Soon Sammy's Red Hots".

The oddly-located Evanston branch of DMK Burger & Fish is closing up shop - at least, with this concept. From Phil Vettel's story:

In a press release, DMK Restaurants said the Evanston location would be replaced by "an idea they can't stop thinking about." The unnamed, undefined new restaurant will open in the fall.

I know I posted about this in this thread, but Sunday, I walked by there again, and it looks like it is all over for Las Asadas on N. Pulaski Rd. It is not going to reopen.
If I am wrong, I will accept the deficiency.

I think it's safe to say it's closed; they've removed it as one of the locations on their website.

I'm not surprised; I ate there a couple times and I wasn't impressed. Its quality lagged considerably behind that at the Bucktown and the Lee Street/Des Plaines locations I've eaten at.

The new location of Pita Inn at 4700 W. Dempster has a banner on the front announcing that the grand opening will be Wednesday, June 3.

There's very fancy back-lit artwork on one wall.

Jack's Restaurant in Skokie--reports have this former 24-hour mainstay closing for good in September-October. Formerly Jake's until 1965, somewhat-dwindling & geriatric business have made the owners decide to take advantage of the real estate boom on Touhy Avenue and sell. No clue as to what follows in its space.

Coming of age in the mid-to-late 1970's, for us Jack's was the last stop of the evening (the other was Gold Coin on Dempster) in the wee morning hours before heading home, maybe to sober up a little over an oliveburger and a cup of coffee, certainly to ruminate over our dates that we had just dropped off. The conversation was wandering but pertinent & the waitresses always understood the importance of these late-night meetings. Good times.

as i was walking down logan blvd. i stopped to meet the owner, lynn, of the soon to be opened Catalpa Cafe, on the SW corner of logan and sacramento. she'll have tables outside, under some shady trees, and hopes to open for all meals around the end of june. this is a a decent location for a diner type place, i think.

Bummer re Jacks- we used to go there while our car was serviced at pep Boys across the street. This is one of the few places where all of our family can find something to eat as i have two very picky kids.

It's been a long time since I was a regular customer there but I practically grew up in the place (my Dad took us there all the time) and I also spent quite a bit of time there during my post-college days and later, during my newlywed phase. I have great memories of the place but it stopped being special to me a while back. Damn, I'm old.

It was my irresponsible dad stop when my kids were small. We'd go to the movies and then stop at Jack's for fried food and shakes. But it's been nearly 20 years since I last stopped in.

I eat lunch there on a fairly regular basis when I feel like having breakfast or a Jack's salad. I'll miss the place, but it won't be as much of a heartbreaker as Kow Kow or Cho Jung.

thanks for catching one of my mistakes. i meant the northwest corner of california(not sacramento) and logan. i'm always confusing the 2 streets. it's a small apartment building and the cafe's kitchen is a new build-out.

The K-Mart on Elston south of Foster is closing. It will be remodeled and replaced by the first Chicago location of Seafood City. From the sound of it, it's basically the H-Mart of Filipino food. It should be a nice addition to the food shopping scene.

Rubino's Seafood at Halsted and Lake St closed in March 2015 and moved to 4949 Elston in Mayfair. Besides their normal wholesale biz they now have a retail outlet in their cooler. Going back to take photos and check out their offerings got there just a little while ago when they were closing up. Only opened until 3:30pm right now.

I had noticed the building was torn down recently. I didn't know if they had closed business or moved, so this is good news.

Stopped in today for the first time. It's walkable from my house and I've been driving by daily thinking I should check it out. Finally did and will definately return.

For no good reason I was expecting a "Fish Guy" type experience. This place is way less frills but with just as good customer service. The "retail" area is a small side room off the warehouse with some self-serve fresh selections. Tongs, plastic bags, take what you want and it's weighed. You pay the office manager. It was obvious it was my first time there so they walked me through the process and were very friendly. I was looking for Mahi Mahi. They had it but only frozen. I wanted something to grill tonight so I went with fresh salmon. They cut the amount I wanted and it rang up as $2.87. What? This was enough for myself, husband and toddler. I made him repeat himself. Yep, that's the price. Was it Copper River? No, but it was very fresh and made beautiful sandwiches grilled on sourdough with red onion, tomato, lettuce and saffron aioli.

They assured me they could get anything I wanted with advance notice. Overall, a really good experience.

Are you kidding me?? $2.87 worth of fresh salmon was enough to feed two adults and a toddler?!?!

How much was it per pound? $2.49??

Despite it being located within spitting distance of my house, I haven't been in yet. I was always under the impression that Rubinos on Lake and Halsted was a place to get frozen product like pre-portioned fish and breaded shrimp, etc. Do they have a good amount of fresh fish at this new location? It would certainly be more convenient for me than driving to Boston Fish Market or Dirks.
