Quick request. Any suggestions for the above? I seem to remember Silver Spoon on N. Rush St. getting some good remarks. Any place else?

http://www.starofsiamchicago.com/ - was my choice when I worked in the area.

I used to have lunch very often at DAO Thai 230 E. Ohio . Both food and service were more than adequate and the settings were pleasant ,especially in the summer time on the outside deck.
it also was quite affordable considering the location.
But I have not returned since 2010 since I do not work in that area anymore.

I'll second Star of Siam. It's solid, but nothing that rings up an 11 (for that, hop the brown line to Western and swing a dead cat).
Prices are reasonable, and don't miss the Record Mart and the independent book store on that block -- hard to believe that those two places exist in River North.

Thanks for those recos! (Don't know why I didn't think of Star of Siam myself--used to go there frequently for lunch.)

BTW...I went to the websites of Star of Siam and DAO Thai, and they appear to be exactly the same place. Not only do their websites look identical, but the PDF menus that one can download also appear to be identical. Owned by the same people?

Yes, they are owned by the same person. As was Singha, but that location closed years ago.

As often happens after such queries, our plans changed, and we ended up neither anywhere near Mich. Ave. nor at a Thai place. We ended up at Owen & Engine! Nevertheless I'm appreciative of the input and hope it proves helpful to others. It will definitely be helpful to me.

By the way, I don't know why this is still bugging me, but it is...I hate having the appearance of "crying wolf"--i.e., sending up a flare for quick recommendations, and then not acting on them.

Just wanted you to know that when I've been guilty of this, it's always because I'm trying to satisfy a small or large group request. The collective says it wants something, then for whatever reason (sometimes for excellent reasons) changes its mind in the course of the day. This is beyond my control.

Anyway, just reiterating my hope that the thread proved useful in some ways to some members, and wasn't a total waste of bandwidth. It wasn't a waste as far as I'm concerned, since I got my memory refreshed about one good place and learned for the first time about another.

Stopped in recently prior to a show at Winter's Jazz Club. Before previous shows here, I'd drive and eat out of this area, but decided to take the bus, so wanted to be within a short walk.

We used to go fairly frequently when in college in the late 70's/early 80's. Not many Thai restaurants in Chicago back then. Probably haven't been here in 25 years.

I enjoyed my meal. For the money, in this part of the city, you could do WAY worse. For me, I would only return if I needed to eat in this 'hood, but wouldn't hesitate. I suspect this may happen prior to a future show at Winter's.
