Saw them featured on the Hungry Hound last night. The tamales with cheese looked tasty.

Tamales Garibay on Kedzie appears to be closed. Last few times I drove by, the venetian blinds were down and the lights were off. Today I got out of the car and looked and the counter and dining room are in disarray. Their web site is down and their Twitter feed makes mention of them selling tamales at a flea market, but even the Twitter feed hasn't been updated since February 1.

Sad. This was always a wonderful place for me to pick up some last-minute dinner. The owners were always very nice to me and, at least in my experience, they were "the best tamales in Chicago".

Oh no! That is sad news. (Especially sad for me since I was planning to pick up dinner from there tomorrow)

Hey! Good news! Driving down Kedzie the other day the lights were on and the "Open" sign was lit. Stopped by for lunch today and the tamales are as good as ever. Zippy flavors, fluffy masa . . . sigh.

The sign on the door says the store is currently open 9A to 5P Tuesday thru Friday.

The menu is a little shorter than it used to be. Now 5 tamales are offered:

Red sauce with chicken
Mole sauce with chicken
Green sauce with pork
Jalapenos with cheese
Squash with cheese

That's great news, but no Saturdays is a bummer.

The guy who owns the dry cleaner across the street told me the owner was very ill and that's why it closed. Hopefully this means she recovered.
