I am in. I will make my grandmother's orange cake. Had considered chocolate pudding but justjoan beat me to it.

That is the mom cake. I had forgotten I spoke of the Marzipan Torte from Lutz. Quite frankly, don't think I have the energy for that one, although that was probably my favorite bakery dessert. My favorite home-baked was the Koenigskuchen.

I will make an apple crisp. My mother was a good, sometimes very good, cook and baker. Her crisps were always perfect. This is not a food memory that has gone rosy with the years. There was a perfect balance between the apples and the topping. I do not like desserts that end with sugar as the dominant memory. I hope this dessert meets the criteria for those that like homey desserts.

The noodle pudding I had mentioned previously was wonderful. But it is best served hot, or at least warm. It loses something in being reheated. Another time. The crisp is perfect any which way. This will be fun!

So sorry, but I'm out for Sunday. I don't think there's anyone else on the wait list, but if so, there's an opening. Actually, I think Cathy might be back in. I now have bronchitis, so that makes it over 4 weeks of being sick. Then to add insult to injury, one of my mom's neighbors backed into her this afternoon as she was walking home. Nothing broken, but plenty of damage to ligaments and bumps and bruises. She's in the hospital for at least a day or two. Please send up prayers and/or positive vibes.

I haven't heard from Cathy yet, but pairs called, so come on back.

    Hi,

I had a very full day yesterday. I see you have a full house, so my temptation is abated. I'm going to stay home to take care of a bunch of loose ends.

    Have fun!

    Regards,

It was sweeter than I would like but the refreshing green grapes made it still delicious.

Thanks for making me do this and I posted about my mum's bread pudding as well for the next time this comes up.

    Pairs4Life,

I am glad my encouragement worked. It is great to revisit childhood foods and find there is still something likable about them.

I'm just sorry I wasn't there to trip down memory lane.

    Cathy2

    Dear Jen,
Thank you for hosting the exchange this month. It was a lovely afternoon. The meal you prepared was perfect for the day. The conversation was spirited, to say the least. And fun. Your dessert was enjoyed at home. I would like the recipe.
I hope to see you at the next exchange.

I feel so bad that your mom had that terrible ordeal. I hope she is doing well. I would love to help in some way. I could bring some meals this weekend. Drop off on Saturday, if that works. I hope you are feeling better. Please feel free to call me for anything that you need.

Thanks, doll! I'll post the recipe when I get home. It's a very basic devil's food.

    Devil's Food Cake
    2 cups all-purpose flour
    1 tsp baking soda
    1/4 tsp salt
    *Sift together

    1/2 cups cocoa
    1/2 cup warm water
    *Stir together

1/2 cup buttermilk (I used soured milk)
    1/2 cup water
    2 tsp vanilla
    *Combine

    4 ounces/1 stick butter, softened
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup brown sugar, packed
*Beat butter and sugars until creamy.

Add 2 eggs. Stir in cocoa mixture. Alternately stir in dry ingredients and buttermilk mixture.

    'Dat's dat.
The frosting was just traditional Italian buttercream, but since it was subpar I won't post it.

    Enjoy.!

And then I remembered. My sister's god mum used to make caramel brownies. The caramel was sandwiched between the layers of cakey brownie.

When I first got to Northwestern there was an awesome bakery called Ganache. She used to make her brownies the same way.

Hello everyone (I wonder if any of you will see this). I'm thinking of hosting the dessert exchange Sat. Sept 12th. It would be the same as last year...dinner at the local church ($10.00) and then exchange at my home (Kingston). You can fit in berry picking at my You Pick Berry farm if you want. The church dinner will be Swiss Steak (which some of you know is the local's FAVORITE meal). To guarantee seating you would have to be in your seat at least by 4:30. So let's see who is interested.

    Razbry,

Why not consider the first weekend in October? It will be cooler, reliable catch of raspberries and maybe everyone will be more freed up?

    ***

Are there any exchange dates, which are unannounced for this summer or are we on hiatus? Mom2 lives in Carol Stream now. I checked to find there is a nice dining room available to reserve for a gathering. I thought it might be a good setting for an exchange where everyone brings their Mom (or close relative or friend).

I like the idea of a "Bring Mom to the Exchange," as long as we're exchanging desserts and not moms. ;-) i think early October would work for me, if it works for Razbry. That September 12th date kept nagging at me and then I realized it's Parents weekend at college.
