Well, I've found my sandwich. Not La Milenesa, but certainly the 2nd best bss I've ever had. Bless these guys. Can't wait to go back and try their pizza with "showcase style crust"!

FYI showcase style crust = very close to Salerno's thick crust. Not my favorite style. Looking forward to trying more of their sandwiches though.

It had been over four years since my last breaded steak sandwich, the most appalling example I can remember. It took that long to recover from such a traumatic experience. D'anardo's was a good place to get back on the horse.

I ate it immediately at the pizzeria and enjoyed the contrast of crispy edges and sauce-sogged parts. The simple red gravy and not-overcooked peppers play important supporting roles. Days later I found myself wondering if D'anardo's other sandwiches—meatball, sausage, eggplant, pepper & egg—might be as good.

Tried any more? I haven't gotten around to it yet.

The joy of the breaded steak has yet to ware off. Haven't tried anything else yet.

I am surprised I haven't posted in this subject. :!:
I was tipped off to Ricobene's on 26th St. way early in my culinary exploits. Let's just say I somehow managed to sneak in its breaded steak sandwiches at the UIC Pavilion when attending college ice hockey games there in the mid-1980s.
The one served at Ricobene's on 26th is still the best I've had. There were occasional side-trips to the Ricobene's @ Pulaski Rd. & 51st St. when I attended Commodore 64 user meetings from 1986-1993 (the monthly meetings were on a Sunday afternoon at a southwest side location), and the Ricobene's on E. Lake St. near Wabash Ave.
    The pictures beneath are of
    1. The breaded steak from Luke's on Harlem on the northwest side. It is not so great. Adhere to its italian beef sandwich {or its hallowed Vienna Beef hot dog}.
    2. The top-shelf breaded steak from Ricobene's on 26th St. :D
    3. The breaded steak from the now-closed Ricobene's on Wells St. near Lake St. in downtown Chicago.

I just had the chicken parm (on a terrific split top New England hot dog roll) from PQM. Wow, what a great sandwich. If a steak could be subbed for the bird, I am confident that a truly great breaded steak sandwich can be accomplished. Actually, a nice piece of cesina would make for a good milanesa....
