Who's ready to get messy this weekend?

    WHAT IS A BOODLE FIGHT?

Well, I'm not an authority on the subject, but from what I've found out about it with my limited research:
It has its roots in Filipino military. It was a communal dining experience where regardless of rank, soldiers would dine as one using only hands to eat. Typically the food is spread out on banana leaves on one table. Any dish from the Philippines would be acceptable, even soups and stews are common, so the theme is actually pretty open to anything Filipino. Think of it as a Filipino smorgasbord.

It is only briefly mentioned on LTH, and nothing first hand, only as an observer over here. There is not much about the subject on the internets, no wikipedia entry, but here are a few random links. Here.Here., and Here.

Prior years, newcomers from time to time get lost trying to find the spot. It is just north of montrose beach, but that doesn't mean it's on montrose, and it's not exactly on the beach either. It is actually just a little north of Lawrence Ave. Please look at the map and answers to other questions here:

This should be a good one for collaboration, as there will be many components of varying skill levels. Basically we're going to lay a bunch of banana leaves down on the table. Add rice(s) into the center, and whatever other filipino food strikes our fancy around the edges. Then we all dig in eating with our fingers! We'll have to probably have a couple, or few rounds of fresh leaves and reloading in order to keep as sanitary as possible. We will also need jugs of water and wet wipes handy to keep our hands clean! Should be a sight to see for the passerbys.

I looked at your links and that looks amazing, I'm very intrigued. I have a volunteer garden clean-up until noon, but I'll be over after that. I'm not sure what I'll do it may be just backup this time as I'm going on vacation Monday. I'll definitely bring some gallon jugs of water, wet wipes, paper towels, beer and whatever else strikes my fancy after I do a little research.

Teresa and I have the banana leaves, and garlic rice to go on the spread covered. I also picked up some fresh Taro Leaves to make Laing (taro leaves with coconut milk, pork and shrimp). I'm also planning to do the Inasal, but to To switch things up a bit, I think I'm going to make turkey instead of chicken, if I can find one small enough at Aden live poultry.

    So far that makes,
    Food:
    Banana leaves for the table.
    Garlic Rice
    Inasal Turkey
Laing (taro leaves with coconut milk, pork, and shrimp)
    Lumpia

    Non-food contributions:
    Paper towels
    water
    wet wipes

Patel Brothers on Devon always seems to have them. I have never seen them anywhere else. They are called patra leaves. Walk through produce, they are in a cooler against the back wall.

I have also read that you can find it dried at some Asian groceries, though I haven't looked for dried yet.

My friend Helen makes this salad. She serves it partially frozen.

I was a bit worried yesterday that the weather wouldn't deliver as promised, but it was a really beautiful day. The lake is higher than I remember most of last year and the waves were crashing. While a slightly smaller turnout than average, the food was not in short supply, and it was as grand a feast as I could have imagined. My favorite nonfood moment of the day was when glennpan's son, Gabe, played chess against himself. He was of course both excited to win but disappointed that he lost. 2nd favorite (or was it least favorite?) was when a stumbling drunk Juggalo traded a warm Icehouse for the last turkey leg. I was sad to see the turkey leg go, but that guy really needed some food in his stomach.
