Have never seen them in the states outside of SF Chinatown.

I spoke too soon. While they may have them, they're not good.

The Glenview West store (Willow and Sanders) has a big tropical fruits display in the lobby, with mangosteen, lychee, dragonfruit, passionfruit, guava, etc.
Assi Plaza and Super H-Mart have had them too, on occasion.

I bought one for $5 (!) at Mariano's in October.
    It was horribly rotten inside.
    I exchanged it for another.
    Rotten.
    There won't be a third.

Man, I was excited when I saw this thread title but pretty bummed that it's $5 for one rotten mangosteen. I definitely got spoiled in Thailand buying a kg of mangosteens for about $1.

I saw them a couple of weeks ago at MarketPlace on Oakton (& Skokie).

They were $4.99 lb. I got 3 for around $4, but they're nothing I'd want to eat on purpose again (these, not mangosteens in general, which I love).
