Hot Buttered Coffee and the Bulletproof BreakfastSummer’s almost over…the lax living has to stop, get rid of that beer belly, do wind sprints until you drop. Loudon Wainwright III (Rufus’ dad)
Eating to excess is, for me, an occupational hazard – and it’s a hazard I hit into regularly. I try to eat less now and again, but I’m not organized enough to diet with any commitment or consistency, so I admit: I’m looking for an easier way.
A brother-in-law of mine, a doctor who lives outside Denver, is one of the fittest men I know. Recently when we were visiting him and his family, he served me a Bulletproof Coffee for breakfast.
A Bulletproof Coffee is coffee plus butter and MCT (the acronym stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride, usually a coconut or palm oil product), maybe with a little non-sugar sweetener like Stevia. It sounds revolting, I know, but it’s not bad tasting at all and here’s the thing: it kept me full for the rest of the morning, all the way until early afternoon.
Bulletproof Coffee, according to its adherents, also provides a caffeine boost without the consequent crash, and there is some research to support the contention that MCT oil is good for enhanced brain function (and is there anyone who doesn’t want that?).
There has been criticism of Bulletproof Coffee, but there’s also been criticism of my rapidly expanding gut. And my general feeling is that it almost doesn’t matter what diet you follow: simply eating more consciously can have beneficial effects. It’s kind of like biodynamic farmers who strictly follow the rules and stir their pots in only a clockwise direction and bury the cow horn under the full moon, actions may have no actual effect on their produce. Still, paying obsessive attention to arcane rituals – and to the actual crops – seems to have a positive effect on the final product.
So I’m going to give Bulletproof Coffee a shot. I have all the necessary ingredients, and Carolyn (who is all in favor of my dropping 20 or so pounds) bought a frother (the kind used to froth milk for cappuccinos) to help disperse the oil droplets in the coffee.
Now, regarding the biohack aspect of all this, I understand Bulletproof Coffee is especially good for those on a low-carb or no-carb Atkins-type diets, but I’m not going that way. I’m not even using Bulletproof Coffee as a breakfast substitute. My plan is to have a breakfast of Bulletproof Coffee, egg, piece of fruit and vitamins. That approach seems less extreme and more reasonable…who knows, I may be able to go until dinner without additional chow.
At any rate, I’m going to give it a try. If I suddenly seem slimmer and smarter, you’ll know why.
