Hi all! We are opening on Oct. 19 - it's a soft opening, but we're finally opening our first retail space (and commercial kitchen). Yay!

If anyone knows of a local shop that does vinyl window signage, I'd appreciate a recommendation.

Strong rumor has it that Portillos will not be coming to Deerfield because the Village is looking to put in a warehouse club (rumor is that it is courting Sam's Club) with a gas station that will take up the space Portillo's was going to use.

After all that behind the scenes work to get Portillos there? Link or source of information, please!

I was told the mall owner might be the one trying to get the warehouse club there. The village definitely has been trying hard to get Portillo's in. I don't like Sam's Club.

I can only say that putting in a warehouse club was problematic because Jewel had the final say over whether any other building could sell food. My source tells me that Jewel has signed off on this and that if a warehouse club (Sam's because another Costco is too close to Deerfield) comes in it will go where Wonder used to be and it if is looking to put a gas station in there would be no room for Portillos.

The Deerfield Patch said Portillos was originally supposed to open in November. So far, no signs of progress. We will have to see and I hope someone can contradict what I have heard but so far the rumor (and yes, it is just a rumor) is pretty strong.

Your Friday update on the odd restaurant merry-go-round that is Wilmette Avenue:

    1) Contadino (which replaced The Avenue) has closed, and is being replaced by Gusto, a branch of the Glenview restaurant. Should be open shortly, according to the site.

    Gusto of Wilmette
    1146 Wilmette Ave
    Wilmette, IL 60091
(b/t Central Ave & Leclaire Ave)

    2) Hotcakes Cafe is moving two doors east, and is being replaced at 1195 Wilmette Ave. by Trendy Taco. Same owner. Weird.

More bulletins tomorrow, as events warrant. Other changes seem to be afoot.

First, at the recently vacated Los Nopales space at 4544 N. Western, a new banner has appeared promising the arrival of La Catedral cafe. Assuming this is a 2nd location of their Little Village location, unless they are moving the whole operation. Anyone familiar with this place?

Their Facebook page today says that they will be opening tomorrow from 7 am to 3 pm. Their website does not seem to be operational. This appears to be a second location.

DNA Info in 2013 gave some history of the place and its name and ownership change after the first incarnation closed in September, 2011, for lack of business. The current version has crepes and panini in addition to some Mexican dishes and is primarily breakfast and lunch.

I usually don't get excited about bakeries, but I really like what I see on La Boulangerie's menu. I'm looking forward to the opening. Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe worth noting that even though the address is 3129 W Armitage, the entrance is actually on the Kedzie side of the building (just south of Armitage).

This is also very interesting. There's a sports bar in Brighton Park called MaddAnthony's which the owner has apparently converted the upstairs into a decently nice cocktail lounge with a little bit of a dress code (i.e. no sneakers or sandals) along with craft beer. The drinks in the article sound pretty good. Very interesting indeed. Not right near public transit, but not too far - 2/5 of a mile from an Orange Line stop:

They are billing it as a speak easy and it opens at 9pm. Their Facebook says reservations are suggested. Their website also lists live music events.. very cool. Hope this place turns out well. It also suggests that it might be a late hours venue (i.e. 4am) but not sure yet. The live music is listed as ending at 2am. Anyway, they are open for business.

hi ronnie; actually there's new CP signage on both the kedzie side (facing scofflaw across the street) and the parking lot which one enters from armitage. the building's kind of depressing: the smoke shop inside has had covered up windows on a large part of the building for several years! and a sign saying 'open during construction'...

I grew up in this area, and nobody has ever called the part of Clark south of Foster SoFo. I just consider it a part of Andersonville, just like anyone else. Except for that one bar's name, that name has never been mentioned by a single person I know at all. Also good to hear Cemitas Puebla found a new space at Armitage and Kedzie, to replace the North Ave. one they were forced out of.

Interesting Cold Stone is trying again in Chicago, after their last city location in Lincoln Square closed. Except for the cake batter ice cream, I always found them overpriced. I wish Marble Slab could make a comeback in the Chicago area, again. I must not be the only one who remembers when they had a location at Village Crossing Shopping Center, which was actually decent.
