I don't know how this got away from me but I just missed the Gulyas Fest, dammit. It was last week. So, in order not to miss the Taste of Hungary, I checked and found their website. The Gulyas Fest was a real kick last summer and I am very saddened to have missed it this year. But I'm hoping that the Taste will make up for it. I believe the same people are behind both festivals and I know they're both held at the same location.

    From their website:
"Our special guests this year are the Szászka Folk Band with László Orbán violinist, Katalin Harsáczki singer and Csaba Tamás pop musician- who guaranty live music throughout the day!
Come and enjoy a multitude of traditional Hungarian dishes including the world renowned Gulyás (the famous Hungarian goulash - a rich meat stew). The goulash will be made this year by the winner of the 2014 Gulyás Festival - the Borsodi Lányok.
We will also have Halászlé - fisherman's soup, and Meggyleves - chilled sour/tart cherry soup (which is actually sweet ...). There will also be Csirkepaprikás - chicken paprikash, and Töltött káposzta - stuffed cabage as well.
And this year's SPECIAL is the whole pigs roasted on charcoal and can experience live sausage stuffing - which you can even taste afterwards!!!
You'll also find plenty of options to satisfy your sweet (and salty) tooth including Lángos - deep fried flat bread - elephant ears, Kürtőskalács - chimney cake, Palacsinta - crêpes and more!
    Entrance fee:
    ~ $15 - adults (ticket includes 3 samplings)
    ~ $5 - children under 12 (ticket include 1samplings)
    ~ free - children under 6"

Crap, I'm working that day. The gulyas festival, which I finally attended for the first time last year, was pretty legit and reminded me very much of Hungary in terms of atmosphere, taste, and sound.

Köszönöm szépen, I went last year and ended up taking adult Hungarian at Csík Hágó Magyar Iskola. A lot of fun. It looks like another year and I might even have Hungarian Citizenship.

Just bumping as a reminder. I plan on being there around 12:30 or so with a friend from Balassagyarmat.... Thought if I were going, I should get expert advice (and evaluations).

P.S. For those who need a little more info, here is a very good write-up of its sister festival--same folks, same place--from last year.

Honestly curious, because I'd love to attend more festivals (just moved to the city!), but last weekend I went to the Polish Festival (I think there was a different name, but that's what it was basically sold as). It may have had some Polish food, and sold some Polish related stuff, but to me it was essentially a carnival (with carnival and casino games!) with overpriced food and beer, that you had to pay $7 to get into. Yes, there was also polka music at a stage, but it was clear that the main focus was on selling you stuff or advertising various things.

To be clear, and not totally negative, it seemed like there were lots of people there having fun, and I know that it's possible that this type of festival is really great, it just wasn't my thing - so I'm wondering if somebody can compare them so I know what to expect!

p.s. I was in Hungary a few months ago for a week or so on a backpacking trip. Just Budapest, so I can't really say I really know much at all, but it certainly seemed like a beautiful country from what I did see!

I'll be there around 2:30, looking forward to it as we have always missed the Gulyas fest due to competing events.

I'll be there about 1 pm in a red-checked shirt and white ball cap (with a 44th Bomb Group logo...it was my dad's WW2 unit). Come up and say hi....
