neither have I as I've always gone for lunch. Mrs & I did go last week just before closing, while I certainly didn't feel unsafe, the neighborhood certainly had a much different feel in early evening as compared to lunchtime and I am one not to let a feeling of safety determine where I go when I travel/where I eat. It won't stop me from going in evening but just something to be aware of.

Shame on me for not having been to Jake's for a number of years, both the pastrami & corned beef were fantastic. Mrs & I were in a deli coma on our drive up north after having dinner there.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

Cabbagehead and I enjoyed our first visit to Jake's on Saturday on our way up to visit his mother in Wisconsin. We loved our lunch of corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, which were terrific, and thought the matzo ball good, although the soup a bit blah. The people were very friendly, and the decor, if I can use such a word, was fabulous--a true blast from the past. We really appreciated the menu limited to real deli sandwiches and soups. No wraps, no tacos, no panini, none of that stuff. We closed our eyes to the two salads on the menu.

Now if we can only convince our kids when they drive up with us to skip Kopp's in favor of Jake's.

I have yet to visit Jake's. I always try to hit Kopp's for at least custard, sometimes a burger, so I know how your kids feel! But I definitely need to check Jake's out.

Had a great corned beef sandwich and a reuben on a stick (2 mini reuben's) from Jake's at the Wisconsin State Fair on Thursday night, before devouring some cream puffs.

Update: Stopped at Jake's for lunch and had sticker shock!
Jake's now has a regular sandwich price and a double the meat sandwich price.
Corned Beef is $14 & $18 with Pastrami $16 & $21. Other prices have similarly increased.
I think the order person said the double sandwich had 1/2#.
The prices are exclusive of tax.
Jake's still uses Eisenberg Corned Beef, still cooks it on the steam table and still slices thick and hot right off the steam table while you watch.
The only comparable experience I have had was at the Stand Up Bar at the Berghof.
The sticker shock must have been evident as I was told Jake's was having a special on Corned Beef at $10 but since we were two, we ordered the double sandwhich for $18 plus tax. Chewed a big hole in a 20.
Fantastic sandwich with just perfect Corned Beef!
With no new or additional location, I keep wondering how long.........?

There is an additional location in the Shops at Grand Avenue. Yes, it's in a mall food court next to a Culvers (a corned beef sandwich and a concrete is a hell of a one two punch), but the sandwiches are made in exactly the same way as the "real" location by people who seem to give a crap. If you can get beyond the ambiance, it's not a bad alternative.

While Trap shooting with a friend Sunday, we had a discussion about Jake's.
My friend lives in Greendale and says he goes to a location near him at Southridge Mall Food Court.
And indeed, there is a Jake's at Southridge.

I don't expect ambiance at Southridge but the parking will be easier and free. I haven't been to Grand Av since they opened.
Should be an easy trip for me because I go right past Southridge on my way to Kopp's!
Kopp's Cheeseburgers are good but not as good as Jake's corned beef.
I usually only have a waffle cone at Kopp's these days. Yesterday it was Tiramisu, my favorite!
