Except for the cake batter ice cream, I always found them overpriced. I wish Marble Slab could make a comeback in the Chicago area, again. I must not be the only one who remembers when they had a location at Village Crossing Shopping Center, which was actually decent.

I believe that was Marble Slab Creamery, which was basically the same deal, but I agree, much better.

Though it happened months ago, I haven't seen it mentioned here so I'll mention it: Pronto 'Za at Division and Halsted has closed. I'm not surprised as I observed (IMO at least) a slide in quality.

For better or worse, they're back in business.

Interesting, I've driven by the Harwood Heights location for years and it looks "cute" but it gets universally wretched reviews. Yet somehow they've managed to stay open for at least the better part of a decade, so who knows.

Buzz - Burgers, Barrels an Beer is closed. It was near the intersection of Irving, Damen and Lincoln. Not sure what happened; no sign, no furniture, big scaffolding on the building.

I work right at that intersection. We could really use some solid lunch options over there. I never made it to Buzz, but it didn't seem to be very popular with my co-workers. We tried Johnny Casserole. I think we must have ordered the wrong thing. I wanted to love it, but the sandwich I had was very bland.

Something called Venezuelan Bowl Grill is opening tomorrow at 2461 N Lincoln Ave in Lincoln Park near DePaul University, according to their Facebook post (https://www.facebook.com/11565007545576 ... =3&theater). I think this is different from the Venezuelan Bowl Grill in Joliet, but not sure.

Also - there is a new Mediterranean place and coffee shop (Sociale & Cafe Press) coming to AMLI 900 in the South Loop soon at 800 S Clark as well as a Korean place called Nara at 1132 S Wabash. Nara's website doesn't provide much but it looks like it also has a lounge. Not sure if this is the same Nara as what was in West Loop Gate area before. Anyway, all of their business licenses were issued to them so they should be in business any day now.

A new Beatrix opening soonish in the former Cicchetti space at Northwestern Hospital (671 N. St Clair). Signs out advertising for staff. Part of it will be "The Market at Beatrix", meaning take-out stuff apparently.

And, Maple & Ash "opening soon" per their facebook page a couple days ago. It's on Maple St. (8 West), and the "Ash" part refers to the big-ass fireplace that will be featured. They will also offer a range of salts to suit the most discerning palate.

Johnny's Casserole has closed too. With Browntrout closing, the neighborhood has got some churn. On the plus side, Danny's Egghead Diner, Melao and Snappy's are still around to serve a delicious lunch.

I just ordered from them on Wednesday I think. Phone is working but goes straight to message. No change on website. Probably just a kitchen issue or something (hopefully!!!!!!!)

I, too, hope we can take the "temporarily" and "be back soon" language at face value. From the time the second incarnation opened, we've been frequent customers. They bring something to the neighborhood that no one else does.

Wow--Rustic House is gone? I only remark on it because on our last visit (a couple of years ago) they literally couldn't fit more people into the place. (People were seated cheek by jowl up to and including the front door, so diners would have to move their chairs a little when anyone wanted to get in or out.)

They closed back in early June, not due to lack of business but because a then unnamed restaurant group had made a substantial offer for the property.

The former Pizza by Alex site has windows papered over with Fannie's cafe, bakery and boutique coming soon. Pizza by Alex had a little attention on LTH in 2008 with less than favorable reports. After one or two management changes in the last year they closed down with the furniture removed and a for lease sign in the window.

Fannie's web site really only has a home page as of today. The papers in the windows are basically large versions of the home page.

This will be a second location for a bakery in Harwood Heights called Fannie Schmoe's, which produces only sweet stuff. I wonder whether they will use the brick oven that Alex's probably left behind to produce bread.
