The Great Holiday Baking Show

Hi- I've seen a few ads for this program, which is going to start on 11/30 on ABC, and it runs for four weeks. There are going to be six contestants. It is based on the Great British Baking show, and Mary Berry is going to be one of the judges for this. I hope this is better than the last spin off they had a few years ago on CBS. Having "A Charlie Brown Christmas" as a lead-in for the initial show is pure programming geniusness.

Johnnie is no Paul, but there's Mary, a tent with camera shots across the tops of flowers, the challenges, the 3-2-1-bake! and nobody playing the Food Network fool. Will there be sheep? The contestants seem fine, the first one gone did the worst work of the night and I'm in.

Mind you, those cookies were no biscuits, but there was rugelach.

Hi- I was pleasantly surprised as to how much the show compared to the British version. You have to deal with the commercials, which breaks things up, but there is nothing I can do about that. One of the contestants is from Chicago. It was nice that they did not try to create drama. The two hosts are ok too. I like this show much better than I did the previous clone a few years ago. Next week they are going to bring back the holiday house competition as the lead in. The families really go all out when they decorate their house for the holidays.

It seemed like the skill level of some people was less than what I saw on the British show. The Brits were all top tier people. I think many of the Americans would be in first-to-go category on the British show, if they even made it on. I wonder how they selected the contestants.

A show could be made from contestants selected by the British versus one selected by the American production company. The early shake out could be interesting.

It is possible the American show may differ wildly in the production end. The impression I have of the British show, it is a succession of weekends. The contestants do have some ideas of what to expect and practice during the week. It would not surprise me if the American contestant is banged out a lot faster without this opportunity to study and test ideas between shows.

The show was apparently filmed in the UK using the British show's tent location. It that's true, they must be filming on a compressed schedule. Might also limit the people able to participate.

The other thing to remember is that the show is a huge phenomenon in the UK, which is going to attract a lot of highly qualified contestants, vs a new U.S. show that might have been thrown together quickly.

The lady from Staten Island absolutely did not represent.
